    Position Summary

     

    The Special Education Teacher supports the instructional process by serving students with diverse learning needs. This position is responsible for developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), delivering specialized instruction, collaborating with staff and families, and ensuring compliance with federal and state special education laws.

    The teacher fosters student growth in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living while maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment.

     


     

    Essential Responsibilities

     

    • Adapt classroom materials and instruction to meet individualized learning plans.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
    • Conduct evaluations, assessments, and eligibility documentation.
    • Lead and facilitate IEP and evaluation meetings.
    • Monitor and assess student progress toward academic, behavioral, communication, and functional goals.
    • Provide direct instruction to students individually and in small group settings.
    • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families.
    • Supervise and direct paraprofessionals, instructional assistants, and support staff.
    • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress reports and required compliance records.
    • Manage classroom behavior using research-based strategies.
    • Monitor students across educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, etc.).
    • Respond to emergency situations and report incidents in accordance with district policy.
    • Provide assistance to medically fragile students as assigned (e.g., feeding, toileting, personal care) under appropriate supervision.

     


     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    Knowledge of:

    • Special education laws and regulations, including IDEA and FAPE
    • Child development and age-appropriate instructional strategies
    • Behavioral management techniques
    • Curriculum development and lesson planning

    Skills in:

    • Applying assessment instruments and analyzing data
    • Operating standard office equipment and educational software
    • Maintaining accurate records and documentation
    • Facilitating meetings and communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders

    Ability to:

    • Establish and maintain constructive relationships
    • Maintain confidentiality
    • Adapt to changing priorities
    • Demonstrate patience, professionalism, and flexibility
    • Work collaboratively with diverse individuals and teams

    Qualifications

     

    • Valid Missouri Special Education Teaching Certification
    • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred)
    • Experience working with students with diverse learning needs preferred
