Minimum Qualifications
- Collegiate professional with endorsement in special education visual impairment.
- Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) preferred.
- Eligible for, or in possession of, appropriate Virginia teaching license.
- Transcription of student materials as well as continuous walking, carrying, bending, sitting, standing, stooping, lifting, and driving.
- Work involves risk, at times, from interaction with special needs students, which may include accompanying emotional or physical impairments requiring special techniques.
- Must use universal precautions at avoiding contagious disease.
- Employee in this position must display a great deal of flexibility, creativity, and initiative.
Examples of Duties

Provides direct and indirect instruction and support to students with visual impairments.

Interprets and explains eye condition(s) and the ensuing educational implications to school staff responsible for instruction of students with visual impairments.

Develops and implements individualized educational plans for students with visual impairments.

Conducts functional vision evaluations for enrolled and referred students with visual impairments.

Works cooperatively with other professional staff members who are involved in the educational programming of students with visual impairments.

Confers frequently with parents, school staff and other community professionals regarding the educational, behavioral, and social needs of the students with visual impairments.

Uses the most appropriate educational, communication medium (regular print, large print, braille, aural) or a combination for students with visual impairments, as determined by the IEP.

Provides for the acquisition and instruction of adaptive equipment and materials to be utilized by students with visual impairments.

Acts as a liaison with the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped under a cooperative agreement with this agency and NPS.

Maintains a clear, concise, and timely record keeping system.

Provides a positive educational environment for students.

Collects data to demonstrate educational progress of students.

Prepares instructional materials for student use.

Supervises students in the classroom, general school building, and community.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Considerable knowledge of the implications of visual impairments as they relate to the growth, development, and education of students with visual impairments.

Communicates effectively both orally and in written form.

Considerable knowledge of the rules and principles of literary and Nemeth braille codes with the ability to instruct and transcribe materials in each code.

Knowledge of the function and use of assistive, accommodative devices for use by the students with visual impairments.

Exhibits a working knowledge of State and Federal regulations and guidelines.

Ability to accurately measure, observe, report, and record learning progress of students.

Ability to coordinate and implement an itinerant caseload serving students with visual impairments.

Knowledge of basic orientation and mobility techniques used with visually impaired persons.

Knowledge of functional low vision and low vision aids prescribed for use by students with visual impairments.
