Salary Range:
Maintenance Worker: $21.1230 - $28.3046/hour
Equipment Operator: $24.7684 - $33.1895/hour
Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 7 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.
Summer Hours: Monday through Thursday, or Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Winter Hours: Monday through Friday, 7-30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Responsible for performing a full range of maintenance duties on city buildings, equipment or grounds and/or operating a variety of equipment.
Scope of Responsibility:
Maintenance Worker: Incumbent performs most of the maintenance duties required of the Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker, but is not expected to function at the same skill level, operates less equipment, and usually exercises less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Incumbent is usually supervised while working and work fits an established structure or pattern.
Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker: Incumbent performs full range of duties as assigned, operates full range of small and medium heavy equipment, works independently and exercises judgment and initiative. Incumbent receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the division. Under typical circumstances, incumbent has advanced from the Maintenance Worker position.
Position Duties
Equipment Repair and Maintenance
- Checks tires, oil lubricant, water levels, lights and fuel; washes lubricates and adjusts equipment; changes tires.
- Maintains shop and storage areas used in performing assigned tasks; maintains cleanliness of work area and tools.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Duties
Public Utilities
- Requires ability to operate dump trucks, sewer jets, front-end loaders, closed-circuit television units, service trucks, flusher trucks, cranes, snowplow and pumps.
- Maintains, inspects and constructs water lines, wastewater lines, manholes, hydrants, valves, and lift stations.
- Cleans wastewater lines and unclogs sewer line stoppages; inspects sewer lines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Skills/Qualifications for Maintenance Worker:
- Two (2) years of related work experience in construction and maintenance work including (1) year of experience operating light and medium equipment
- Possession of a State of Montana, Class A, Type 1 commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement, no air brake restriction, or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment
- Three (3) years of related work experience in construction and maintenance work including two (2) years of experience operating light and medium equipment
- Possession of a State of Montana, Class A, Type 1 commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement, no air brake restriction
- High school diploma or GED
Other Qualifications
Requires heavy physical effort, moving over 75 pounds, on an intermittent basis (less than 15% of the time). Requires moderate attention to detail or deadlines on a frequent basis (between 45% and 70% of the time). Work requires exposure to disagreeable elements, at least one of which is intense, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time).
