About the Department
Larimer County is seeking an experienced Professional Engineer to join the team as an Assistant County Engineer. This leadership role offers the opportunity to guide the planning, design, and delivery of infrastructure to support a growing, evolving community.
The Engineering Department oversees transportation, development, drainage, and capital project delivery, with a focus on creating systems that are well coordinated, fiscally responsible, and built for long-term sustainability. We integrate technical expertise with strategic and operational leadership to continuously improve how infrastructure is planned, designed, and delivered across the county.
As the Assistant County Engineer, this position will lead a team of engineers and technical professionals, oversee multimillion-dollar projects and programs, and collaborate with County leadership, partner agencies, and the community. The role brings together engineering expertise, operational leadership, and policy awareness to guide complex work and create infrastructure systems that are resilient, efficient, and aligned with community priorities.

Position Duties
What you'll be doing:
- Partnering with the County Engineer to support daily operations while helping shape the department’s long-term strategy and direction.
- Providing leadership and oversight to multidisciplinary teams across transportation, development review, and capital project delivery.
- Serving as a technical advisor on complex engineering issues, with an emphasis on drainage, floodplain management, and regulatory compliance.
- Guiding development review efforts to ensure infrastructure design aligns with County standards, long-range plans, and sound engineering principles.
- Supporting the development and implementation of engineering policies, standards, and procedures that improve consistency, efficiency, and service delivery.
- Coordinating with internal departments, regional partners, consultants, and outside agencies to align infrastructure planning and project delivery.
- Overseeing consultant and contractor work, including procurement, scope development, contract oversight, and quality assurance.
- Contributing to budget development, capital planning, and resource prioritization for engineering programs and projects.
- Representing the department in meetings with the Board of County Commissioners, partner agencies, community stakeholders, and technical groups.
- Acting on behalf of the County Engineer as needed.

What we're looking for:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Colorado with a strong background in public works, transportation, or civil infrastructure.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to support, develop, and empower teams.
- Experience with drainage systems, floodplain management, and related regulatory frameworks, including complex compliance considerations.
- Strong project management skills, including budget oversight and contract administration.
- Experience with development review and applying engineering standards within land use decisions.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to a variety of audiences including elected officials, partners, and the public.
- Collaborative approach with experience working across departments and agencies to solve complex challenges.
- Sound engineering judgment and attention to detail, with an understanding of long-term operations, maintenance, and community outcomes.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and delivering high-quality service.
Minimum Qualifications
All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.
Ten (10) years of experience in a directly related field or in the performance of similar duties and responsibilities, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience required.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent education from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil Engineering or a related field is required.
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) issued by the State of Colorado or a state having reciprocity. If not certified by the State of Colorado, PE must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.
