Key Responsibilities

The Geologic Mapping and Paleontology Program of the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) is seeking a full time permanent geologic mapper.  This is a unique opportunity to build a career focused on geologic mapping in Utah. This position will be focused on federally funded STATEMAP geologic mapping at multiple scales.  The incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of geologic maps and supporting materials for variety of mapping projects with a focus on the stratigraphy, structure, igneous rocks, and unconsolidated deposits of the Great Basin part of Utah. 

Key responsibilities and day to day responsibilities of this position:

  • Create digital geologic maps, cross sections, correlation diagrams, stratigraphic columns, and supporting materials
  • Perform geologic field work that includes field mapping, collecting structural measurements, collecting samples for geochemistry and geochronology, and measuring stratigraphic sections
  • Prepare digital geologic maps, supporting materials, and reports for review. 
  • Review geologic maps from UGS and external scientists and students.
  • Address various review comments and complete map publications on time for contract deliverables, provide timely reviews of geologic maps in collaboration with other UGS staff and outside geoscientists.
  • Develop geologic expertise for the Great Basin and share this expertise via conferences, publishing, and public interaction.
  • Collaborate with other Utah Geological Survey staff and oversee assigned geologic mapping projects.

 

Qualifications

Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:

  • B.S. in Geology required; M.S. or Ph.D. in Geology is preferred.
  • May underfill based on the candidate's experience level.
  • Must be able to create digital geologic maps based on fieldwork, various base orthoimagery sets, digital elevation data, stereo imagery, and previous geologic mapping.
  • Must have strong field geology skills, including rock identification, collecting structural measurements, stratigraphic description, digital field mapping, and sample collection.
  • Must be able to assure personal safety in a variety of remote wilderness and urban settings.
  • Must have a background using ArcGIS software to prepare and edit geologic maps.

Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications: 

  • Experience creating high quality digital geologic maps using ArcGIS (ArcPro), and other map related software.
  • Experience conducting geologic field work including field mapping, rock identification, collecting structural measurements, stratigraphic description, geochemical and geochronological sampling.
  • Experience creating geologic maps based on a variety of base data including orthophotography, digital elevation data, stereo photography, and other data sets.
  • Experience with remote field work that involves safe travel through various wilderness and urban settings, and remote four-wheel driving.
  • Experience preparing reports, papers, and presentations including supporting figures, tables, and summary materials
  • Experience reviewing geologic maps and reports and providing constructive feedback to collaborators and coworkers.
  • Experience with Utah geology.
