About the Department
Performs intermediate skilled work leading and participating in the work of a street maintenance and construction crew; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Street Superintendent. Supervision is exercised over crew members.
Physical Requirements
This is very heavy work requiring exertion in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator.
Position Duties
- Leading and participating in the work of a street maintenance or repair crew; operating construction and maintenance equipment.
- Leads and participates in the work of skilled and semiskilled workers and equipment operators in the cleaning, repair, maintenance and/or construction of streets, curbs, gutters, storm drain facilities, sidewalks and related facilities;
- Performs or assists in performing maintenance, repair and construction tasks;
- Assembles necessary tools and materials for project;
- Reads and interprets blueprints and drawings associated with projects;
- Operates construction and maintenance equipment including grader, backhoe and roller;
- Discusses job requirements with and receives instructions from supervisor;
- Prepares work reports;
- Trains and instructs direct reports;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in skilled and semiskilled maintenance or construction work.
Other Qualifications
Thorough knowledge of street and storm drain construction, maintenance and repair practices; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to lead the work of others; ability to understand and follow work orders and prepare simple reports; ability to operate trucks and construction equipment; ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods, often under unfavorable conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
