Role Overview

We are seeking a strategic and results‑focused  programme and portfolio manager to handle the portfolio of priority projects  for M&C UK. The role will be responsible for handling the pipeline of projects and initiatives that underpin financial delivery of our in-year plan and future strategy. The programme and portfolio manager works closely with the leadership team and is responsible for leading the portfolio, including working with internal partners to understand the status and requirements of projects and initiatives, providing support where needed, tracking progress and delivery, and providing portfolio status to the leadership team.

The role requires strong leadership, stakeholder management, and programme governance skills to ensure initiatives are set up for success, delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with strategic and business objectives.

In addition to owning portfolio management, the programme and portfolio manager will also be responsible for the delivery of complex business programmes that drive value creation and operational excellence within M&C UK.

Key Accountabilities

  • Shape the strategic direction of plans by ensuring that all decision-making is driven by the right commercial and strategic data and insights

  • Provide regular portfolio status and updates to the leadership team ensuring progress against strategic goals are tracked and key risks/issues raised

  • Identification of interdependencies, commonalities and duplication across programmes and individual projects with the intention of streamlining where possible

  • Lead change initiatives, ensuring smooth adoption of new processes, systems, or structures across impacted teams

  • Promote a culture of learning and improvement, gathering lessons learned and applying standard methodologies across programmes

  • Uses process, operational experience or continuous improvement methodologies to understand inefficiencies in the organisation and struggles and surfaces them, to drive new value creation opportunities

  • Leads the playbook for portfolio management including the tools and processes required to effectively lead this activity

  • Coach and support others in the business in the successful delivery of business projects and continuous improvement initiatives, including business case development

  • Responsible for end-to-end delivery of the projects / programmes within the portfolio using internal reporting systems and tools. Initiating and closing programmes as required

  • Definition of programme objectives and being on point to support partners from across the wider business to develop business cases

  • Ensure programme governance is effective, to ensure wider business partners are aware of programme status, risks, issues and landmarks

  • Build strong relationships with internal and external partners, handling expectations and ensuring effective communication throughout the programme lifecycle. Maintains regular partner communication and engagement including providing regular project updates and performance reports

  • Oversee programme budgets, resource allocation, and vendor relationships to ensure efficient use of time and cost

  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities and required by the business

Summary – Decision Rights

The role will be responsible for leading the strategic portfolio and for delivering strategic projects and programmes, which are key to the successful delivery of the financial long-term plan for the M&C UK business. The programme and portfolio manager will work closely with members of the M&C UK LT.

There will be scope to identify and shape new opportunities to underpin growth and to enable optimisation, across the UK mobility and convenience value chains.

Job Holder Requirements

Education

  • Degree in business, economics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Programme or project management certification preferred (e.g., MSP, PMP, APM, PRINCE2)

Experience

  • Experience in deploying change projects and business projects and programmes in a retail or commercial environment

  • Business case development experience essential

  • Ability to work virtually with multiple partners is critical

  • Continuous improvement or business transformation experience preferred

  • Experienced leader
