    Position Title: ESL/Bilingual Teacher 

    Strong Literacy Background preferred.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. A valid Connecticut Certificate as an elementary classroom or secondary teacher based on assignment.
    2. Endorsement as a Bilingual Teacher (009) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (111).
    3. At least five years experience in the field or experience the Board of Education and Administration may find appropriate and acceptable.
    4. Ability to communicate effectively in English as well as selected native language both orally and in writing preferred.
    5. Deep knowledge of effective instructional strategies, assessment and identification processes, and research related to English Language Acquisition.
    6. Demonstrates effective, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving capabilities. 

     

    REPORTS TO: Director of Teaching and Learning and Building Principal

    JOB GOAL:

    The ESL/Bilingual Teacher provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing students' ability to acquire the English language, works collaboratively with classroom teachers, and serves on other relevant committees/teams at the building and/or district level.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    1. Demonstrate deep knowledge and understanding of the Connecticut English Language Proficiency (CELP) Standards, English language acquisition, and cultural competence. 
    2. Administer assessments for the purposes of identification and annual state assessment of identified English Learners.
    3. Design and provide appropriate instruction and service plans for students and oversee English Language Tutors who provide English Language support. 
    4. Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists regularly about instructional support for English Learners.
    5. Use data management systems and other sources of student learning data to analyze students' skills, and to adjust instruction as needed.
    6. Provide formal and informal professional learning regarding all aspects of English Learner development.
    7. Facilitate frequent and effective home-school communication through conferences, written communication, parent training, interpreting,  and translating. 
    8. Assist the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Building Principal with the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of formative and summative assessment data.
    9. Participate as an active member of the District English Learner (EL) Team.
    10. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Teaching and Learning  or the Building Principal.

     

    TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:    Ten-month year with additional days as needed at per diem rate for assessing and curriculum development.

     

    EVALUATION:    Performance of the job will be evaluated by the Director of Teaching and Learning or designee in accordance with Board of Education Policy.
