Position: School Bus Driver
Qualifications
Job Goals: Transport school bus and passengers between assigned stops and schhol according to specified routes and time schedules. Maintains order during trip and adheres to saferty rules when loading and unloading passengers.
Term of Position: 9 months
Evaluation: Performance of the job will be evaluated annually.
Performance Responsibilities
1. Exercises greatest care at all times in transportation of school children.
2. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment, and property. 3. Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as reasonably possible.
4. Opens and closes entrance door and keeps it securely closed while the bus is in motion.
5. Wears safety seat belt assembly while driving.
6. Instructs pupils who ride buses in rider safety annually, and practices emergency exit drills at least twice annually.
7. Prohibits the use of posters, stickers, or advertising material of any kind in or on school bus. 8. Adheres to provision of Motor Vehicle Code, Pupil Transportation Regulations of Board of Education and terms of the School Bus Operator’s Permit Procedure Manual including.
9. Operates school bus at a safe speed not to exceed the posted maximum speed limit nor slower than the minimum speed limit except when a slower speed is required for safe operation. Drivers are not to exceed the maximum posted speed limit or those set by local school board policy or drive slower than 40 mph on any interstate highway.
10. Activates the warning amber flashing lights at least 500 feet before designated stop. 11. Make stops in right-hand lane when loading or discharging pupils on highway and only at designated points, where bus can be clearly seen for a safe distance from both directions.
12. Operates school bus warning devices while stopped to warn approaching traffic to stop and allow pupils to cross highway safely.
13. Requires pupils who cross the road to walk to a point 10 feet or more in front of the bus, stop before reading a position in line with the left side of the bus, and await signal from the bus driver to start across highway.
14. Picks up and discharges pupils on side of road on which they live on dual highways divided by a physical barrier or unpaved area.
15. Stops school bus at railway crossings- opens entrance door of bus and driver’s window and determines when it is safe for a vehicle to cross railroad tracks. No such stop needs to be made where a police officer or a traffic light directs traffic to cross.
16. Keeps a copy of the route schedule in bus, including time bus starts in the morning, time it leaves each point at which pupils are taken on, time of arrival at school, bus odometer reading at beginning of route where first is picked up, where other stops are made, and reading upon arrival at school. 17. Operates school bus in accordance with route schedule and designated stops.
18. Transports only students assigned to a particular route, unless otherwise authorized building administrator(s) with the consent of the parents.
19. Reports misconduct of pupils on school bus or at bus stops on the way to or from school and shall be guided by the building administrator’s advice and direction, subject to the regulations of School Board Policies.
20. Performs daily pre-trip inspections of the entire interior and exterior of the bus. 21. Fills fuel tank of bus.
22. Checks level of oil daily, and adds necessary amount of oil.
23. Cleans interior and exterior of bus regularly.
24. Cleans windows, including windshield and rear window, and warning and signal lights regularly. 25. Requires pupils to keep bus clean.
26. Reports on number of pupils transported and miles traveled to the Transportation Secretary. 27. Reports all accidents, delays, and driver’s absences to Transportation Supervisor and/or Transportation Secretary promptly.
28. Contacts parents immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible, in the event of a student injury, serious illness, or other matter pertaining to the general welfare of the student.
29. Suggests safe and efficient routes, stops, and schedules to Transportation Supervisor. 30. Attends in-service training to improve skills, attitudes, and knowledge of school bus driving and pupil control.
31. Observes established and accepted work practices and procedures in accordance with School Board pupil transportation policy, particular school policy, and supplemental administrative directives.
32. Reports to Transportation Supervisor motorists who violate Missouri “School Bus Stop Law”. 33. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
34. Complies with and supports federal, state, and school regulations and policies. 35. Performs related duties as assigned by the administrator(s) and/or Supervisor of Transportation in accordance with this school system’s policies and practices.
36. Work requires climbing, sitting, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions.
37. Frequent walking and lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment up to 40 pounds.
38. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means for the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. 39. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
40. Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
41. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, road hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
42. Attendance to training sessions and bus driver meetings beyond the normal assigned hours is necessary. 43. Daily contact with students to provide orderly and safe environment is required. 44. Contact with parents and an administrator is required.
45. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
46. Additional Duties May be Assigned.
