Description
Performs manual work in a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects, collecting refuse, performing general grounds keeping duties, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Streets Crew Supervisor.
Essential Functions
- Operates a variety of mowers and equipment in grass cutting and trimming operations; operates weed eater and leaf blower.
- Cuts, trims, and removes shrubs and trees from Right of Ways, sidewalks, and roadways; collects and removes leaves.
- Collects garbage, bulk items, dead animals, hazardous materials, and recycling; empties refuse containers.
- Removes debris and trash from City properties and streets.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining sanitation trucks and grounds keeping equipment.
- Assists in the set-up of seasonal events and activities by preparing and hanging signage, hanging and removing lights and decorations, etc.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control; mixes salt; spreads salt on sidewalks.

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of hand tools and equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires sitting and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a very quiet location (e.g. park trail, storage or file room).
