    Greenwich Public Schools seeks a full-time ESOL/Spanish teacher for one or more GPS elementary schools.

    Position Purpose

    • As ESOL teacher, The ideal candidate will teach and assess elementary school English learners at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels of English proficiency in reading, writing, and other subject areas aligned to the CT Core Standards and the CELP Standards. As Spanish teacher, the ideal candidate will understand the growth and development of the elementary school child, be able to plan and deliver grades K-5 Spanish lessons accordingly, and help students learn subject matter and skills that will broaden their learning experiences. 

    Essential Responsibilities

    • As ESOL teacher
      • Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, use appropriate techniques, and serve the needs of English language learners.
      • Maintains accurate and complete records.
      • Assesses student learning on a continual basis and differentiates instruction and assessment based on linguistic proficiency level as needed.
      • Communicates student progress with families through the use of interim reports, report cards, and conferences, as well as family engagement sessions and field trips specific to English learners.
      • Designs and implements assessments that measure progress, and uses assessments to refine curriculum and instructional practices.
      • Maintains a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and the learner.
      • Establishes and maintains professional relationships, including with co-teaching colleagues.
      • Participates in professional learning.
      • Helps complete administrative tasks in support of the K-12 ESOL program.
    • As Spanish teacher
      • Helps elementary school students develop oral and literacy skills aligned to the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and to District curriculum.
      • Plans and organizes instruction in ways that maximize student learning.
      • Modifies, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students.
      • Uses technology, where appropriate, to deliver instruction and assessment.
      • Evaluates student performance consistent with District standards.
      • Maintains accurate records.
      • Works collaboratively with District and school colleagues to support students' linguistic needs in Spanish.
      • Participates in professional learning.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • As ESOL teacher
      • Experience working with adolescents.
      • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
      • Effective, active listening skills.
      • Ability to work effectively with others.
      • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
    • As Spanish teacher
      • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in both English and the target language.
      • Effective, active listening skills.
      • Ability to work effectively with others.
      • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
      • Experience working with elementary school students preferred.

    Qualifications Profile

    • CT State Certification, or certifiability, in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages, Grades PreK-12 (#011), or Emergency Teacher of English Language Learners, Grades PreK-12 (#024), or comparable certification or certifiability, required. CT State Certification, or certifiability, in Spanish, Grades 7-12 (#023) or in elementary education also required.
    • Oral/written fluency in English required
