We’re seeking a Traffic Project Engineer to join our team in San Jose. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation in traffic engineering, signal design, and traffic planning. This role involves independently applying standard engineering principles to a variety of traffic projects, including signalized intersections, corridor studies, traffic impact analyses, and multimodal transportation improvements. Candidates should be confident performing traffic-related roadway design (signals, traffic control, signing, striping) with an emphasis in complete streets and/or planning studies with minimal supervision while working as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Design and coordination of traffic engineering projects including signal design, pavement marking/striping, signage, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), ADA curb ramps, and multimodal corridor improvements
  • Preparation of traffic signal plans, signal timing, and traffic control designs using industry-standard tools such as Civil 3D, SignCAD, AGI 32, and AutoTURN
  • Conduct traffic forecasting and modeling analyses and Vehicle-Miles Traveled assessments using CUBE, TransCAD, or other Travel Demand Management (TDM) or Activity-Based Models (ABM) software
  • Assess traffic operations using Cubic Synchro/SimTraffic and develop signal timings
  • Support traffic planning and analysis, including Traffic Impact Studies, Vision Zero initiatives, Active Transportation Plans, Circulation Elements, and Area Specific Plans
  • Prepare construction specifications, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and Requests for Information (RFIs) for traffic-related projects
  • Apply Federal, State, and local codes, standards, and Caltrans requirements to traffic design and planning projects
  • Develop conceptual design alternatives and feasibility studies for traffic signal and corridor improvements
  • Collaborate across departments and with external stakeholders, including public agencies, consultants, and community groups, throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support project scheduling, permitting, and construction oversight as needed
