Tri Pointe Connect, the mortgage affiliate of Tri Pointe Homes, is looking for an experienced individual to join our talented group in Scottsdale, AZ, as a VP, Associate General Counsel - Financial Services. This position is hybrid working out of the Scottsdale Operations Center.
Position Summary:
Serve as the primary legal advisor to Tri Pointe Connect’s mortgage platform and Tri Pointe’s affiliated financial services operations. This role will provide legal and regulatory guidance across the lifecycle of residential mortgage lending, including origination, secondary marketing activities, and post-closing and interim servicing (through loan sale and transfer) operations, as well as support for Tri Pointe’s affiliated title, escrow, and property and casualty insurance operations.
The position will serve as the lead legal subject matter expert for Tri Pointe’s financial services platform and partner closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to interpret and apply federal and state regulatory requirements, structure compliant business initiatives, manage third-party and investor relationships, and support audits, examinations, and enterprise risk management.
This role will provide practical, solution-oriented guidance in a highly regulated, operationally complex environment. This role will also be responsible for supporting strategic growth initiatives and promoting a culture of ethics, transparency, and compliance throughout the organization.
Responsibilities:
Mortgage and Consumer Finance Regulatory Advice
- Advise Tri Pointe Connect on the application of federal and state mortgage and consumer lending laws and regulations, including:
- Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA)
- Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosures Rule (TRID)
- Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA)
- Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)
- Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA)
- Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and related CFPB regulations
Regulatory Examinations, Audits, and Oversight
- Assist with preparation for and respond to supervisory examinations and audits
- Support interactions with regulators and government agencies, including CFPB, FTC, HUD/FHA, VA, USDA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac
- Review, interpret, and draft (as needed) internal policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance
Vendor and Third-Party Relationship Management
- Negotiate, draft, and review vendor and third-party contracts, including technology, servicing, and operational agreements
- Advise on vendor risk management frameworks and regulatory expectations for third-party oversight
Secondary Marketing and Capital Markets
- Serve as primary legal advisor to capital and secondary marketing functions, including on legal and regulatory matters associated with loan pricing, lock policies, investor relationships, and capital markets execution
- Support capital markets functions, including pricing, hedging, and execution strategies
- Provide legal guidance on investor requirements, delivery obligations, and loan sale execution and transfer of servicing to investors
Title, Escrow, and Insurance Regulatory Support
- Provide legal and regulatory advice to Tri Pointe Assurance and Tri Pointe Advantage, as needed
Litigation and Consumer Complaints
- Coordinate with internal litigation counsel and outside counsel on litigation matters and regulatory or consumer complaints, including enforcement actions and investigations
- Assist with responses to borrower complaints, regulatory inquiries, and demand letters
Data Privacy and Information Security
- Advise on data privacy and cybersecurity laws applicable to mortgage and consumer finance operations, including CCPA and other state privacy regimes
- Support data breach response planning, incident management, and compliance with data protection requirements
Transactional and Strategic Support
- Provide legal support for strategic transactional initiatives involving financial services operations
- Review lending-related contracts, including loan documentation, payoff and refinance demands, servicing-related issues, and investor buyback or indemnification requests, including but not limited to loan-level defect-related issues
Job Requirements
Qualifications: Required
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- 7+ years of experience in mortgage, consumer finance, or financial services regulation
- Significant experience working with or advising regulated financial institutions, including mortgage lenders or mortgage bankers
- Demonstrated experience negotiating and managing complex vendor and third-party contracts
- Experience supporting audits, examinations, or regulatory inquiries
Preferred
- Prior in-house legal experience at a mortgage lender, bank, or financial services company
- Experience advising on secondary market transactions and investor requirements strongly preferred
- Experience supporting multi-state mortgage operations preferred
- Prior experience advising title, escrow, and insurance operations, including with respect to compliance with applicable state licensing, consumer protection, and affiliated business arrangement requirements, preferred
- Experience advising on data privacy and cybersecurity issues in the financial services context
Skills:
- Deep expertise in U.S. mortgage, lending, and consumer finance regulations including strong working knowledge of RESPA, TILA, ECOA, TRID, and related CFPB regulations
- Strong analytical, drafting, and communication skills
- Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into pragmatic and solutions-oriented business guidance
- Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with compliance, operations, technology, accounting and finance, and executive teams
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, highly regulated, and operationally complex environment.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously
- Experience with Encompass preferred
Physical Requirements:
- May be sedentary for extended periods, up to 4 hours
- Visual acuity for detailed computer work
- Using fine motor skills for tasks requiring precision such as typing
- After hours/weekend, as needed
- Occasional travel, as needed
