By joining our Roadside Environment Section as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Jefferson County, you’ll
have the opportunity to operate basic automotive and power equipment used in roadside maintenance such as
single axle truck (dump, flatbed, pickup), operate a tractor type mowing machine, assist in brush
cutting/controlling operations.





Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Use construction equipment to maintain roads
  • Use equipment to control vegetation along roads.
  • Use equipment to perform snow removal on highways.
  • Use equipment to spread salt on the highways to prevent icing.
  • Flag for traffic control.


Ideal candidate will have experience in:
  • Driver’s license
  • Eligibility to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Basic maintenance or construction experience
  • Ability to perform general labor work

Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions


Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.




Probationary Period


This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
