DLZ is seeking a Transportation Engineer – Traffic Operations to serve as a technical specialist supporting Michigan traffic engineering. This role is best suited for a PE with strong experience in traffic analysis, modeling, and traffic control design, who wants to be a go to technical resource within the region.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Perform and lead traffic engineering, traffic analysis, and safety studies for Michigan roadway projects.
  • Develop signal design, signing and pavement marking plans, maintenance of traffic (MOT), and Transportation
  • Management Plans (TMPs).
  • Utilize traffic software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, SIDRA, VISSIM, and/or RODEL.
  • Coordinate with roadway designers and project managers to integrate traffic solutions into MDOT projects.
  • Review drawings and deliverables to ensure conformance with Michigan standards and QC procedures.
  • Prepare specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and client progress reports.
  • Participate in field reviews and support construction phase traffic engineering needs.
  • Assist with business development and proposal support for Michigan transportation clients.

  • Recognized internally and externally as a traffic and safety subject matter expert.
  • Delivers clear, defensible traffic analyses that translate into effective design decisions.
  • Maintains strong technical credibility with MDOT, local agencies, and project partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 5–10 years of experience in traffic/transportation engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Demonstrated experience with traffic analysis and modeling software.
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer and/or Civil 3D.
  • Ability to safely access and traverse construction sites in Michigan.

Preferred

  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
  • Experience with MDOT and/or Local Agency Federal Aid projects.
  • GIS experience.
