SHORTAGE DIFFERENTIAL: $1,338.00/month
JOB DUTIES: This is a regional position located in the Respiratory Therapy (RT) department of the Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, a public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i. The HHSC Kaua’i Region encompasses Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH) and Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), both designated as critical access hospitals (CAH), as well as the Kaua’i Region Clinics and its affiliated entities.
The RT department delivers comprehensive services to residents and patients experiencing impairments and functional limitations related to breathing and overall health status due to injury, disease, or other factors. Our services are provided in strict compliance with regulations set forth by Medicaid, Medicare, the Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA), The Joint Commission (TJC), the Office of Healthcare Assurance (OHCA), and other relevant regulatory and private agencies.
The Respiratory Therapist III operates within the respiratory therapy unit of a hospital, utilizing independent clinical judgment to apply scientific knowledge and theory to address complex respiratory care challenges in alignment with providers' orders. This role involves the autonomous administration of respiratory tests and treatments for patients with respiratory diseases and disorders, including critically ill, pediatric, and neonatal cases. The position requires flexibility to work rotating shifts, encompassing evenings, weekends, holidays, call-backs, and stand-by duties, and may necessitate reporting to other facilities within the Kaua’i Region as directed by the supervisor to meet operational needs and ensure patient care requirements are fulfilled.
This position reports to the Respiratory Therapist IV, position no. 59205, or its designee.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in respiratory therapy from a school of respiratory therapy approved at the time of graduation by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have progressively responsible work experience of the types and quantities described below:
RESPIRATORY THERAPY EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience required. Professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist under medical supervision. The experience must have equipped the applicant with a full professional understanding of the evaluation, test, and treatment of respiratory therapy problems and the ability to develop and modify individual patient care plans. For level III, at least one year of experience must have been comparable to the next lower level in this series.
LICENSE REQUIRED: A valid license with the State of Hawaii as a Respiratory Therapist at the time of appointment; possession of a current, valid State of Hawai'i driver's license type #3 preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) issued from the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Applicants are required to obtain necessary certifications within three (3) months of employment if their certifications are not current.
SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: An associate degree in respiratory therapy from a program approved at the time of graduation by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and two (2) years of professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist under medical supervision may substitute for a baccalaureate degree in respiratory therapy. Excess work experience as described under the Experience Requirement which provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree in Respiratory Therapy may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
· KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic principles and practices of respiratory therapy; respiratory therapy treatment procedures; operation of respiratory therapy equipment; monitoring patients; charting observations, evaluation and testing procedures, treatment techniques including use and modifications of appropriate therapy equipment, performing or participating in cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and methods of instructing patients and/or family members; current treatment techniques including use and modifications of appropriate therapy equipment; departmental rules and regulations, hospital policies and procedures, Medicare/Medicaid/the Joint Commission and other regulated guidelines for the provision of Respiratory Therapy services; provision of respiratory services, general union contract agreement practices and general principles of management, supervision and public relations.
· ABILITY TO: Apply the principles, methods and techniques of respiratory therapy; select and use evaluating and diagnostic procedures effectively; prepare treatment plans; deal effectively with patients and other individuals; operate standard respiratory therapy equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs; keep records and prepare reports and instruct patients and others in the application of respiratory therapy procedures; o independently apply principles, methods and techniques of respiratory therapy; instruct patients and others in the application of respiratory therapy procedures; and supervise lower level respiratory therapy personnel; Be an open ended thinker; good listener and communicator; non-judgmental and positive attitude; motivates; team player; work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, call backs, and stand-by; report to other facilities within Kaua’i Region as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
