JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
The Fire Hydrant Maintenance Technician position exists to ensure the City of Brooksville�s fire hydrant system is maintained in a constant state of operational readiness to support fire suppression, emergency response, and public safety. The position directly contributes to the protection of life, property, and infrastructure by ensuring fire hydrants are functional, accessible, accurately marked, and properly documented. The incumbent performs skilled manual labor and technical maintenance tasks involving inspection, testing, servicing, repair, painting, and recordkeeping of fire hydrants located within public rights-of-way, residential areas, commercial zones, and City facilities. Work is performed in accordance with established City standards, safety protocols, and applicable regulations. This position is designated as essential personnel and will be required to work during emergency operations, including severe weather events and natural disasters. Employees must participate in emergency preparedness and response activities, and complete required NIMS (National Incident Management System) training as directed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works under the general supervision of a designated supervisor or department manager.
- Receives work assignments through scheduled maintenance plans, work orders, inspections, and special requests.
- May provide work guidance or task coordination to part-time Hydrant Maintenance Workers or temporary staff, as assigned.
- This position does not typically exercise formal supervisory authority.
- Work safely and adhere to all City policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct routine and systematic inspections of fire hydrants to assess mechanical condition, operability, visibility, and compliance with City standards.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance activities, including flow testing, pressure testing, lubrication of moving parts, cleaning, painting, marking, numbering, and minor above-ground repairs.
- Operate hydrant flow and pressure testing equipment to verify water system performance and hydrant functionality.
- Identify hydrants requiring further repair, adjustment, or replacement and report findings to supervisory staff.
- Remove, replace, or install hydrant road markers as needed.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment, including weed trimmers and chainsaws.
- Operate City vehicles to transport tools and materials to job sites.
- Assist with general landscape, right-of-way, and roadway maintenance tasks as assigned.
- Complete work orders and related documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Coordinate work activities with other City staff and departments as needed.
- Provide courteous assistance to residents and businesses regarding hydrant-related inquiries.
- Follow all safety procedures and traffic control requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

- Exposure to traffic, uneven terrain, noise, and power equipment.
- Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting, bending, kneeling, standing, and walking for extended periods.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS:
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Use of both hands with majority of fingers in each hand. 20/40 vision (in at least one eye), and be able to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels in a typical governmental office (corrective devices acceptable). Occasional light lifting and/or carrying, bending, stooping, working, standing and pulling. Must be able to easily carry (50) lbs.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Experience in maintenance, utilities or a related field preferred. Fire hydrant familiarity and operational knowledge strongly preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Florida Operator�s License, insurable by the City�s current insurance carrier.
- CDL Class B, preferred.
