Position Overview:
This 10-week summer internship provides students with a unique, hands-on opportunity to gain exposure to Mortgage Operations and the end-to-end mortgage lending process. Interns will work alongside experienced mortgage operations professionals and collaborate closely with Mortgage Sales partners in both Retail and Consumer Direct. Through this experience, interns will gain insight into how mortgage applications progress from initial submission through loan closing, while supporting strong credit quality, regulatory compliance, and an exceptional customer experience.
Mortgage Operations plays a critical role in transforming mortgage applications submitted by Loan Officers into successfully closed loans that can be sold on the secondary market or held on the bank’s balance sheet. This internship is ideal for students interested in business, finance, analytics, operations, or banking careers who are eager to learn in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and customer-focused environment. Primary Responsibilities:
Learn the end-to-end mortgage process, including how loans move from origination through underwriting, processing, and closing within Mortgage Operations.
Work closely with Mortgage Operations teams to understand their role in supporting Loan Officers and serving as a primary point of contact for M&T mortgage customers once applications move into Operations.
Review and organize data from the Mortgage Loan Origination System to track key operational metrics and identify trends in mortgage pipeline performance.
Analyze operational performance and connect insights to customer outcomes, including reviewing customer feedback and complaint trends.
Assist with mapping the end-to-end mortgage workflow, identifying process gaps, inefficiencies, or bottlenecks, and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
Support daily operational activities while learning how Mortgage Operations balances efficiency, funding volume, credit quality, and regulatory compliance.
Work under direct supervision while developing communication, time management, and teamwork skills.
Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.
Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:
Currently pursuing or had recently completed their high school diploma
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
Education and Experience Preferred:
Prior office or administrative experience is a plus.
Strong interest in customer service, business, or financial services.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
