The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and collaborative Small Business Tax & Accounting director level professional to join our growing tax team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys serving small business clients, mentoring others, and contributing to a high-performing, forward-thinking public accounting environment. You will play a key role in delivering quality tax services while building trusted client relationships and supporting the development of team members.
Key Responsibilities
Client Leadership & Advisory
- Serve as the primary advisor for a portfolio of small business clients across a variety of industries.
- Build and sustain strong, long-term client relationships and act as a trusted resource for business owners.
- Provide proactive guidance on accounting, tax planning, cash flow, and operational considerations.
- Identify opportunities to expand client services and collaborate with Partners on business development initiatives.
Tax & Accounting Oversight
- Review and approve federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals and small businesses, including (but not limited to) Forms 1040, 1065, 1120S, and 1120.
- Sign tax returns in accordance with firm policy and professional standards.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting engagements, including financial statement review.
- Ensure compliance with current tax laws, regulations, and professional standards.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop managers, senior accountants, and staff within the small business practice.
- Provide technical guidance and review work to ensure accuracy, quality, and consistency.
- Support performance management, coaching, and career development initiatives.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment aligned with firm values.
Practice Management & Strategy
- Assist Partners in managing workflow, capacity planning, and engagement economics.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of small business service offerings.
- Support process improvement initiatives, including the use of technology and automation tools.
- Stay current on tax law changes and industry trends and share knowledge across the firm.
Qualifications
Required
- CPA license in good standing preferred.
- Minimum of 10–15 years of progressive experience in public accounting, with a strong focus on small business clients.
- Extensive experience reviewing and signing tax returns.
- Deep technical knowledge of small business tax and accounting matters.
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and lead engagement teams.
- Strong understanding of accounting systems and cloud-based platforms.
- Experience with ProFx a plus

**Please note that while this position is remote, occasional travel to client locations, corporate meetings and trainings may be required to facilitate effective collaboration and engagement implementation.

The salary range for this position reflects a broad set of factors considered in compensation decisions, including—but not limited to—skills, experience, training, certifications, and overall business needs. The stated range has not been adjusted for geographic differentials that may apply based on the position’s location. At AAFCPAs, it is uncommon for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, as compensation decisions are based on each candidate’s specific background and circumstances. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this role is $138,000 – $ 175,000 per year not inclusive of bonus potential.
