    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Position:                                  Mechanic/Bus Operator
    Assigned/Reports to:            Chief Mechanic and Director of Transportation
    Salary Schedule:
    Employment Term:               240 Days

    Job Goal: To ensure the safety and proper operating condition of county buses and other county vehicles by overseeing routine maintenance and ensuring compliance with state and national safety regulations.

    “Mechanic” means a person employed to perform skilled duties independently in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, school buses and other mechanical and mobile equipment to use in a county school system.

    “Bus operator” means a person employed to operate school buses and other school transportation vehicles as provided by the state board.

    Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required:
    1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
    2. Successful completion of the WV State Competency Test for Mechanic
    3. Minimum of 2 years verifiable mechanical experience with preference given with diesel equipment.
    4. Must possess of be willing to obtain a Class B CDL with a P and S endorsement within the first six months of employment.
    5. Must possess or be willing to obtain West Virginia School Bus Operator Certification within the first six months of employment.
    6. Must possess or be willing to obtain a valid Motor Vehicles Inspection License for the State of West Virginia within the first six months of employment.
    7. Must be able to pass all health requirements established by Federal, State and County Governments.  This includes, but not limited to, negative drug/alcohol test results and passing a physical examination which verifies that the duties of the position can be performed.
    8. Satisfactory background investigation, including by the CIB.
    9. Must demonstrate the ability to follow a set routine and must demonstrate the ability to meet deadlines and schedules.
    10. Must be able to independently diagnose problems and make appropriate repairs to fleet vehicles and other mechanical equipment used by the transportation department.


    Performance Responsibilities: Additional duties may be assigned
    1. Maintains garage in a safe workable order for efficient material flow by insuring that the area is properly cleaned and the materials are stocked in proper locations.
    2. Inspects, diagnoses and makes minor repairs to the mechanical and electrical systems on county buses and vehicles.
    3. Repairs various components on school buses and county vehicles includes but not limited to water hoses, starters, brakes, radiators, wheelchair lifts, and lighting systems.
    4. Performs preventive maintenance as required by WVDE Policy 4336, including but not limited to changing oil, tires, transmission fluid, filters, lubrication, light bulbs and engine belts.
    5. Clears vehicles for use following repairs by test driving them to ensure their safety and roadworthiness.
    6. Operates various hand tools and other equipment necessary to the maintenance and repair or motorized equipment.
    7. Responds to road emergencies in the event of a breakdown.
    8. Maintains computerized records or maintenance and safety inspections.
    9. Provides back-up support to other positions in the Department in case of absence or work overload.
    10. Maintains effective working relationships with mother member of the Department as well as other school personnel and community members.
    11. Drives scheduled bus routes or trips when required.
    12. Must have a basic knowledge of the techniques used in body repair.
    13. Decides if vehicle is safe to operate and also whether repairs are needed to prevent a breakdown.
    14. Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
    15. Attends in-services and workshops as directed.
    16. Maintains confidentiality.
    17. Continuously improves processes. 
    18. Maintains regular attendance.
    19. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Transportation.

    Minimum Physical Requirements: 
    1. Must be able to lift tools, bus parts/equipment, etc. which weigh up to 50 pounds constantly and 50 to 125 pounds frequently.
    2. Ability to work in unusual or extreme elements; such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
    3. Ability to stoop, crouch, crawl.
    4. Ability to work from prone position while reaching up, sometimes awkwardly, for periods for up to 30 minutes.
    5. Ability to stand or walk for a minimum of 8 hours a day.
    6. Ability to work safely from a ladder.

    Salary based on experuebce abd edycatuin based on County BOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
