Job Description

About the Department

The typical hiring range for this position is $12.00 to $13.20 per hour, depending on experience.


GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of poolside and water safety duties and instructions as needed to assure safe use of pool facilities. 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and/or Aquatics Coordinator.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May be assigned supervisory duties as needed.

Position Duties

Performs as an aquatic lifeguard and/or swim instructor.

 

Create and deliver swimming lesson plans for individuals and groups; to children and adult patrons; evaluate swimming skills and progress according to established swimming standards and skill requirements.

 

Ensures the safety of staff and program participants.

 

Monitors water activities and enforces pool/facility rules and regulations to minimize accidents and/or injuries to patrons and staff.

 

Participates in regular in-service trainings to refine and improve life-saving skills.

 

Performs first aid as needed to assist individuals suffering injuries; performs water rescues as needed to prevent mishaps and drowning. 

 

Performs general upkeep and custodial duties; cleans facility floors, mops, sweeps, vacuums, polishes, etc.; cleans pool decks; monitors water temperatures and chemical balances testing chlorination and Ph levels, takes water samples; may make minor equipment adjustments to ensure proper temperature and chemical standards.

 

Performs opening and closing procedures; assists with the setup; assures all systems are properly functioning; secures doors and other accesses; installs the lane lines, buoy ropes, etc.; assists with special events; assures shift duties are completed. Maintains accurate supervisor, cleaning, accident/incident and chemical reports daily.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  1. Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties.

           AND/OR

       2. Six (6) months general experience related to safe swimming, aquatics program participation, working with children or related background.

 

Special Qualifications:

  • Must be 15 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must have valid American Red Cross Certification or obtain within one (1) month of hire:
    1. Water Park Lifeguarding
    2. First Aid
    3. CPR
    4. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Professional Rescuer
  • Must be certified as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), or have equivalent of, to teach swim lessons and be eligible for the $5.00 teaching differential.
  • Must be willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Other Qualifications

Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


General knowledge of rules and regulations of a variety of aquatics and recreational activities, pool equipment and pool maintenance; water safety practices; first aid, CPR, AED; swimming instruction techniques; public relations practices and techniques.

 

Ability to demonstrate advanced swimming skills; move and react quickly to a variety of circumstances; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; demonstrate good judgment and decision-making; follow written and verbal instructions and/or procedures; project voice over the noise of the pool; work various shifts including nights and weekends.

  

Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled pool environment. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as swimming, walking, standing, stooping, lifting, sitting, reaching. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, pool mechanical systems. Occasionally exposed to wet conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. Daily exposure to slippery surfaces. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
