Description
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide a wide variety of person-centered-supports and services to people with developmental disabilities. DSPs empower the people they work for by providing education, experience and exposure so they can make their own informed choices. DSPs model, teach and advocate for people with developmental disabilities in order to support them to achieve their highest level of independent living, enable their fullest participation in society, ensure their civil and human rights are protected and promote their ability to be productive, contributing members of the community. The supports and services performed depend upon the individually developed hab plan.
Position Responsibilities
Assists in the development, implantation and ongoing evaluation of habilitative service plans that based on the person’s preferences, needs and interests related to vocation.
Assists people in developing their vocational skills and exploring career options.
Teaches Job Readiness/Career Exploration classes.
Identify and secure suitable internship and volunteer opportunities for people served, based on choice, needs, preferences and person’s abilities. Provides orientation and maintains relationships with past, current and prospective community contacts.
Requirements
Education and Experience
High School Diploma/GED
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the local job market.
Basic knowledge of how to maintain/operate maintenance equipment.
Good oral and written communication skills
Must be able to read and write case notes as well as understand written directions.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and cope with stressful situations and deadlines.
Demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and maintain concentration.
Create and maintain positive interaction with others.
Basic computer skills.
Successful completion of Introductory Period Training Requirements
Knowledge of developmental disabilities.
Medication Administration certified.
CPR/First Aid certified.
Full SCIP-R certified.
Be authorized as an Agency Driver by
Holding and maintaining a valid NYS Driver’s License.
Maintaining an approved driving record according to Agency Policy and Procedure.
Use of personal vehicle for work purposes.
Proof of insurance being current as a driver on personal vehicle
