Job Description

Job Title: Heavy Civil & Aggregate Intern

Job Summary:

The Heavy Civil & Aggregate Intern will gain hands-on experience across multiple facets of construction operations including field work, project engineering, crew supervision, plant operations, asphalt production, paving operations, and aggregate/quarry environments. This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of heavy civil construction, asphalt production, and aggregate operations by rotating through key roles such as ground crew member, field engineer, foreman support, plant operations, paving crews, and quarry operations, while also gaining exposure to FOB sales and quality control processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Aggregate Plant Operations:

  • Assist with daily plant operations including crushing, screening, and material production
  • Monitor material quality and assist with quality control testing
  • Support plant maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting
  • Learn inventory management and material tracking processes
  • Observe plant production planning and operational efficiencies

Aggregate / Quarry Operations:

  • Gain exposure to quarry operations including drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling processes
  • Assist with site housekeeping, inspections, and operational support activities
  • Observe and learn about material extraction, processing, and stockpile management
  • Understand safety practices and regulatory requirements specific to quarry environments (MSHA)
  • Support coordination between quarry operations and plant production needs

Ground Crew / Field Operations:

  • Assist with daily jobsite activities including site preparation, grading, and material handling
  • Support equipment operators and labor crews in a safe and efficient manner
  • Perform general labor duties such as shoveling, raking, traffic control, and cleanup
  • Conduct basic equipment checks and assist with preventative maintenance
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA regulations

Field Engineering Support:

  • Assist with layout, surveying, and grade checking using GPS and surveying equipment
  • Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications
  • Track quantities, production rates, and daily reporting
  • Support project documentation including RFIs, submittals, and as-built drawings
  • Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, and field personnel

Foreman / Planning Support:

  • Assist foremen with daily work planning and crew coordination
  • Help monitor productivity, quality, and adherence to project schedules
  • Participate in safety meetings and jobsite briefings (JHAs/toolbox talks)
  • Observe and assist in managing labor, equipment, and material resources
  • Support problem-solving efforts in the field to maintain project efficiency

Asphalt Plant & Paving Operations:

  • Assist with asphalt plant operations including material production, loadout, and dispatch coordination
  • Gain exposure to paving crews including laydown, rolling, and compaction processes
  • Observe coordination between plant production and field paving operations
  • Support plant inspections, maintenance activities, and operational efficiency efforts

Asphalt Quality Control:

  • Assist with sampling and testing of asphalt materials to ensure compliance with specifications
  • Observe and support lab and field quality control procedures
  • Learn mix design basics, temperature control, and compaction requirements
  • Track and document quality control data and test results

FOB Sales Exposure:

  • Gain exposure to FOB (Freight on Board) sales processes for aggregate and asphalt materials
  • Assist with customer loadout coordination and ticketing processes
  • Learn pricing structures, customer interactions, and order management
  • Observe communication between sales, dispatch, and operations teams
  • Support tracking of material sales and production reporting

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred)
  • Interest in heavy civil construction, asphalt production, paving operations, or aggregate/quarry production
  • Basic understanding of construction principles and safety practices
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to perform both physical and technical tasks
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications
  • Basic math and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
  • Willingness to learn construction technology (GPS, machine control, etc.)
  • Time management and organizational skills

Work Environment:

  • Combination of outdoor jobsite work, quarry environments, asphalt plants, and plant operations
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, dust, noise, heat, asphalt materials, blasting operations, and varying weather conditions
  • Requires standing, walking, lifting, and physical labor
