Job Description
Full-Time Floor Technician/EVS in our Environmental Services Department.  Five, 8 hour shifts per week, weekend and holiday rotation, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. 80 hours per pay period. 

Full-Time benefits: Health, Vision and Dental Insurance, IPERS, Sick Time and PTO accrual starts on day one.

Department: Environmental Services (EVS)
Reports To: EVS Supervisor / EVS Manager
 

Position Summary

The Floor Technician is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and sanitary floor surfaces throughout the hospital. This position plays a critical role in infection prevention, patient safety, and overall facility appearance by performing routine and project-based floor care using approved equipment, chemicals, and procedures in accordance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and manufacturer guidelines. Will have general EVS cleaning assigned.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Floor Care and Cleaning

  • Perform routine and project floor care including stripping, scrubbing, refinishing, waxing, burnishing, and buffing of hard floor surfaces.
  • Clean and maintain carpeted areas using approved methods such as extraction, spot cleaning, and bonnet cleaning.
  • Properly apply floor finishes and sealers to ensure durability, safety, and appearance.
  • Identify appropriate floor care methods based on surface type (VCT, LVT, tile, carpet, etc.).

Equipment and Supplies

  • Operate and maintain floor care equipment such as auto scrubbers, burnishers, buffers, extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Clean, inspect, and store equipment after use; promptly report malfunctioning or damaged equipment.
  • Safely mix and use cleaning chemicals per manufacturer instructions and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Monitor and report supply needs to EVS leadership.

Infection Prevention and Safety

  • Follow infection prevention practices, including proper hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Use appropriate cleaning and disinfecting agents in patient care and high-risk areas.
  • Place wet floor signs and follow safety procedures to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
  • Adhere to OSHA, CDC, and hospital safety guidelines.

Customer Service and Communication

  • Interact professionally and respectfully with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Respond to floor care requests in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Communicate issues such as damaged flooring, safety hazards, or spills to EVS leadership promptly.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Complete required documentation, logs, and checklists accurately and on time.
  • Follow hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements 
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and quality improvement initiatives.

Teamwork and Other Duties

  • Assist with general EVS cleaning duties.
  • Support after-hours, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage as required.
  • Participate in staff meetings, education, and required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support hospital operations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous floor care or environmental services experience preferred (healthcare experience a plus).
  • Ability to safely operate floor care equipment.
  • Basic understanding of cleaning chemicals and safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of floor care techniques and surface types.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties.

Physical and Work Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods.
