CARE USA is a leader in promoting a comprehensive approach to gender equality and empowerment of women and girls as key to its unshakable commitment to overcoming poverty. The Director for Education Programming is responsible for setting the organization’s strategic direction and vision for girls’ empowerment through providing intellectual leadership to CARE's effort in education. S/he will promote the fulfillment of the rights to equitable and quality education, as well as drive collaboration with other sectors on transformative approaches in adolescent/youth programming.
The Director leads and supervises a team whose mandate is to develop transformative technical approaches for education and girls’ empowerment that promote innovation for learning, foster’s an inclusive environment and enhances gender equality. The Director will provide strategic leadership and vision for the team ensuring alignment with organizational principles and ways of working by evolving its strategy, approaches, linkages, synergies and internal capacity to effectively address, promote and implement CARE’s development priorities. S/he will work with the team to ensure program standards and systems are in place and implemented and will also support business development and mobilization of additional financial resources. S/he ensures linkages to institutional advocacy, partnerships, fundraising, and internal technical and functional teams, and ensures consistency of approaches with other CARE International members and regions.
Reporting to CARE USA’s Vice President for the Program Department, the Director oversees the implementation of the Education team’s strategy, work plans and initiatives, establishing and continuing a strong collaborative relationship with other key teams across CARE and externally.
- Specifically, Director for Education:
- Sets strategic direction and manages the Education Team, in line with (and contributing to) divisional and organizational strategies;
- Promotes, and ensures learning and knowledge management on girls’ and youth empowerment issues programmatically;
- Informs, learns from, and builds relationships with key external organizations, alliances and coalitions, leveraging data from CARE’s and partners’ work to inform advocacy, fundraising and practice around education and girls’ empowerment
- Fosters donor relations and ensures consistent fundraising for education and girls’ empowerment programming.
- Provides technical leadership on girls empowerment
- Provides support to integrate and align work with long-term programs of Country Offices and Regions.

Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Social Sciences, Education, Public Health, International Development or related field
- 10 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in the development, implementation, management and evaluation of programs, particularly working with children, youth, and women, marginalized groups and gender based programs in developing countries.
- 5-10 years successful senior leadership in international development field with a focus on child empowerment, child protection, gender and education and or work with marginalized communities
- 5 years experience managing and leading a complex development program
- Experience in managing USAID grants and/or contracts
- Advocacy experience that has resulted in policy change
- Experience in team management
- Successful fundraising experience
- Planning for and oversight of large budgets
- Understanding and experience of large interdependent decentralized organization like CARE
