We are seeking a skilled Utilities Maintenance Specialist to support our Remote Water Infrastructure systems. In this role, you will take a hands-on/technical approach to developing and managing programs that keep these systems reliable, well-maintained, and in compliance with regulations supporting the Cary and Apex Water Treatment Facility. This position requires strong technical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while serving as a resource for the team and department.

 
Remote Water Infrastructure positions are designated as "critical positions", meaning employees are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, to ensure continued operation of remote water facilities.
 
 Anticipated hiring range: $72,592- $89,169 depending on experience.
 
This position will be based at the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility on 1400 Wimberly Rd, Apex NC.

Position Duties

Coordinates and prioritizes maintenance and repair of water tanks, booster stations and all related equipment; develops and administers preventive maintenance programs;

 

Updates management staff on status of projects; gives oral and written reports periodically;

 

Coordinates the use of equipment, materials and manpower to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy in the Remote Water Infrastructure maintenance activities;

 

Responds to system failures;

 

Consults with the maintenance staff to coordinate work, supplies and equipment;

 

Plans, coordinates and facilitates division's emergency response programs;

 

Participates as a team member in planning and implementation of capital improvements;

 

Checks projects for progress and for conformance to work plans and orders;

 

Inspects new facilities for conformance to Town standards;

 

Orders repair parts for repairs and inventory;

 

Receives requests for emergency and unscheduled work and makes arrangements for their prompt performance;

 

Assists in determining budget needs for the division;

 

Locates and secures service contractors for non-routine work;

 

Work with Plan Review on Work Zone locates and excavation areas;

 

Maintains water pressure zones;

 

Takes information from industrial meters and develops reports;

 

Advises on more difficult maintenance and mechanical tasks;

 

Research new pumping equipment;

 

Prepares reports and maintains records;

 

Organizes and maintains pump station and facility record drawings and O&M manuals;

 

Communicates with town staff as to status of service or project contracts;

 

Ensures all service and project contract costs are captured in work order system;

 

Plans and programs work in coordination with Utilities staff, Public Works, Utility Engineering and other Town staff through the operating and capital improvement budget processes;

 

Assists town staff with hazardous weather response as needed; serves as a NIMS key staff member during inclement weather and emergency operations;

 

Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components of water system;

comprehensive knowledge of the occupation hazards and necessary safety precautions of the work;

comprehensive knowledge of electricity and electronics theory;

thorough knowledge of properties of various chemicals used in the pumping of water;

ability to conduct field tests as required;

skill in the use and care of tools of the trade;

skill in making complex repairs; ability to determine improper operation of water pumping equipment and to take proper remedial action;

ability to plan and implement work;

ability to follow oral and written directions;

ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

ability to keep up with new technologies;

ability to supervise the work of other skilled workers when needed;

ability to work under adverse conditions such as heat, cold rain, and general unpleasant surroundings;

ability to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces;

ability to lift moderate to heavy weights required in performing job functions;

ability to see with such acuity to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs;

ability to hear, talk, and smell.


Physical Requirements

Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and unpleasant surroundings. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. Must have the ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with citizens, staff, vendors and contractors.  An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.
 


Other Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with an associate degree in engineering or related field and considerable experience in water pump station maintenance, repair, and electrical work.

Possession of a valid driver's license with acceptable driving history- Required
 
Operator Grade "A" certificate in water treatment or distribution- Required
 
Requires National Incident Management Systems ICS 100, 300, 200, and 400 Certification (training provided).
