SUMMARY:
The Head Coach (Sports gr. gr. 7-8) is responsible for the organization and
administration of one or more individual middle school athletic program(s). Any Head
Coach of athletics at any level and in any sport, will be expected to maintain a high
degree of integrity for carrying out their respective duties with maturity and good
judgment and will act in a professional manner at all times.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
• Reports directly to the District Athletic Director and Middle School Principal
• Works cooperatively with administrators, supervisors, staff, and others to
perform job responsibilities as outlined
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. As outlined in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement
2. Salary as described in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
QUALIFICATIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential
duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum
levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.
• Qualifications & Experience requirements vary with individual sport
• Possess effective interpersonal skills with the ability to interface diplomatically
with teachers, administrators, parents, students, support staff and outside
professional contacts
Qualified candidate will be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools
or controls, and to talk and hear; Sit and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop,
kneel and crouch; Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision, and
the ability to adjust focus; Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; and
possess effective communication, judgmental, planning and human relations skills, and
will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position
responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list is intended to be illustrative rather than complete and serves to show major
duties and responsibilities and does not express or imply that these are the only duties
to be performed by the incumbent in this position. The employee will be required to
perform any other position-related duties requested by the Athletic Director or
Principal.
Organization and Administration:
1. Operates the program in accordance with the OASD’s philosophy, P.I.A.A. (Pa
Interscholastic Athletic Assoc) & the National Federal Rules and Regulations.
2. Organizes & coordinates the Middle School program of the individual sport to
which they are assigned.
3. Provides an off-season conditioning program.
4. Assigns each assistant coach specific duties and responsibilities.
5. Administers coaching details for home & away games.
6. Keeps accurate records of all equipment & properly stores in athletic storage
provided by school. Communicates to students that if equipment is not
returned or damaged due to negligence, the student will be responsible to
reimburse the district the cost of the equipment.
7. Complete and submit an inventory of all equipment and equipment and
supplies requested for the next season one-week following the end of each
individual sport season.
8. Keeps an accurate, written attendance record for each team member.
9. Keeps accurate records of all injuries sustained in practice or games. Each
record should include but is not limited to date, student’s name, time and place
of injury, type of injury, how the injury occurred, treatment and who was
notified.
10. Communicate to student athletes they are not permitted to use school facilities
or equipment unless the coach or the coach’s designee is available to supervise.
11. Schedules practices in coordination with the Athletic Director and the Middle
School Principal.
12. Keeps accurate records of all contests & individuals &/or team
accomplishments.
13. Ensures all players are academically eligible & that all players’ grades are
monitored throughout the school year.

14. Keeps abreast of new coaching techniques on a yearly basis by attending clinics
or coaching related activities coordinated through the Athletic Department.
15. Ensure only students of the school district are participating in all practices,
scrimmages and games.
16. All District property given to coaches must be properly cared for and returned
immediately upon the end of each individual sport season.
Coaching and Practice:
1. Has a well-organized plan for the year (where appropriate and possible).
2. Has a well-organized plan for each practice session.
3. Teaches each team member the basic skills, techniques & rules required for
playing the position with emphasis on safety.
4. Conducts practices, scrimmages, & contests in accordance with the P.I.A.A.
Guidelines.
5. Strives to develop each individual to his/her highest level of ability.
6. Fosters in each athlete a confidence and pride in his/her performance.
7. Prepares each athlete to meet the everyday challenges of life.
8. Teaches self-discipline & encourage team members to subordinate individual
interest for the good of the team.
9. Teaches good sportsmanship & emphasize fair play with the opposing team.
10. Encourages students to participate in the program.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Schedules & attends any necessary meetings.
2. Travel to and from all athletic engagements with the team. All athletes are
required to ride the bus to and from the games unless parental/guardian
permission has been granted for alternative travel arrangements.
3. Suggests possible pre-season scrimmages & non-league contests to the Athletic
Director. Also assists the Athletic Director with processing the proper forms for
entries for all championship & invitational type contests.
4. Cooperates with the Athletic Trainer to prevent injuries & rehabilitate injured
athletes.
5. Maintains discipline & treats all team members fairly.

6. Reminds team members regularly of the rules governing athlete’s behavior &
encourages them to follow the rules.
7. Is responsible for locker room assignments, locker room security & student
safety. Coaches are required to arrive at the locker room in advance of all
practices, games and remain until the final student departure.
8. Notifies Athletic Department of any faulty equipment and facilities where
repairs are needed.
9. Performs the following pre-season duties:
a) Prepares & distributes a Parental/Participant Information Packet (PPIP)
to each prospective participant prior to the start of any official or
unofficial practice. This PPIP is to be approved by the Athletic Director
prior to distribution. The PPIP must contain, but is not limited to:
• Your philosophy
• School rules from the Student-Parent Handbook
• Additional coaches rules
• Disciplinary consequences for breaking rules
• Practice schedule
• Game/Match schedule
• A receipt for the signatures of the athlete & his/her
parents/guardian which verifies that they have received the
PPIP & will abide by the OASD Student Athlete Code of Conduct.
• Medical history & parental release forms as per the trainer’s
needs
b) Ensures that each athlete planning to participate has a P.I.A.A. card
prior to his physical & that the athlete knows exactly when the physical
is due & what to do with the P.I.A.A. medical packet.
c) Ensures that all participants have a completed P.I.A.A. medical packet
on file before engaging in any physical activity, including pre-season
conditioning or practice.
d) Forwards to the Athletic Office, one week prior to the opening of the
season, the eligibility list with the correct information.
10. Notify the Athletic Director of any home-schooled or Charter school students
participating in the program.
11. Prepares a complete roster of players & necessary information & submits to the
Athletic Office.
