Job Description

Adams Construction Company is one of the oldest asphalt paving firms in Virginia.  Since 1946, Adams has participated in the construction of every interstate throughout Virginia and most of the primary highways. Throughout the Company’s growth in Virginia and into North Carolina, it has strived to maintain a family culture in a corporate world. 

The Quality Control Technician will be responsible for conducting tests on hot mix asphalt (HMA) and component materials to determine compliance to applicable specifications. This position will assist in mixture adjustment and lay down operation to ensure specification compliance.

 RESPONSIBILITES:

  •  Communicate with Plant Operator to identify production goals for projects, mix type and tonnage.
  • Communicate with DOT on mix type and sampling frequency. Pull samples for DOT per DOT representative.
  • Obtain moisture readings of stockpiled aggregate for Plant settings.
  • Pull Asphalt samples for each VDOT mix produced at required tonnage and frequency for testing.
  • Test Asphalt mixture per DOT, Commercial and Federal Specifications.
  • Report test results to Plant Operator and Density Technician as needed throughout the day.
  • Record and report test data of Asphalt mixture to appropriate Data base, Inspector or Agency.
  • Exercise proper care and maintenance of company equipment
  • Ability to safely operate a company vehicle as needed

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy loads of up to 75 pounds or more on a day-to-day basis;
  • The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
  • Capacity to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods, often ranging from 8 to 14 hours, without "giving out" or fatiguing.
  • The ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand with its arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. 
  • The ability to quickly move the arms and/or legs.
  • Comfort working in extreme temperatures (heat and cold), humidity, and dusty environments. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Knowledge and ability to perform mathematical skills (adding, subtracting, division, multiplication, percentages and weights)
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and use measuring devices
  • Frequently work more than 40 hours per week and non-traditional hours including night shift, Saturdays and occasionally Sundays during paving season
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening as well as random tests throughout employment if selected. 
  • Reliable transportation is required with ability to arrive and begin work on time
  • Possession of VDOT Asphalt Field Level I and II certification or ability to obtain
  • Ability to work in a team environment providing respect to all individuals.
