Position Summary



 



 




The Phlebotomy Associate is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are new to the field of Phlebotomy. Under the direct supervision of a certified phlebotomist, the Phlebotomy Associate will learn the essential skills and protocols for collecting blood samples from patients in a variety of clinical settings. Obtaining blood specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, observing protocols and methods established by the Department of Laboratories, including the accessioning routine for proper identification and processing of such specimens.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:




  1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of department and hospital policies and procedures and their execution.

  3. Ability to work a flexible schedule to allow exposure to different shifts and patient populations.

  4. Observing and learning from the primary assigned phlebotomist

  5. Attend staff meetings and in-services.

  6. Complete competency requirements.

  7. Demonstrate ability to maintain a safe environment and use universal precautions.

  8. Ability to obtain blood or other specimens using varied techniques.

  9. Proficient in the use of the laboratory information system and hospital information system (where applicable)

  10. Maintain supplies in a neat and orderly manner.

  11. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.

  12. Make appropriate decisions independently.

  13. Prioritize workload.

  14. Inform management of problems.

  15. Maintain confidentiality of patient data.

  16. Cross training in PSTC, MLW, Phlebotomy/Specimen Management

  17. Performs all other duties as assigned.



 



Education & Experience Requirements



Education: 




  • High School graduate or GED required.

  • Completed Phlebotomy Certification Program Required (WCC)

  • Basic computer skills.



Experience: 




  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the   employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) database and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS database can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.




  • Ability to move about the department and multiple patient locations frequently throughout the workday.

  • Excellent eye hand coordination and dexterity needed to perform venipunctures.

  • Ability to detect and greet patients.

  • Communicates frequently with patients who may have questions and requires exchange of accurate information.
