The Parks & Recreation Department is hiring Summer Recreation Aids to help run evening sports leagues and recreation programs. This is a hands-on, outdoor role perfect for someone who enjoys sports, teamwork, and positive community energy. You’ll be the go-to on-site support for staff, coaches, officials, and participants—helping programs run smoothly, safely, and on schedule while creating a welcoming environment for players and spectators alike.

As a Summer Recreation Aid, you’ll build real-world leadership and customer service skills while staying active and working independently in a dynamic setting. Ideal candidates are 18+, reliable, confident decision-makers who can stay calm under pressure and communicate clearly. Prior experience in sports, coaching, officiating, or recreation programs is a plus, but enthusiasm and professionalism matter most. Position Duties

General Purpose:

The Summer Recreation Aid oversees a variety of evening sports and recreation programs, ensuring smooth operations and a positive experience for all participants and spectators. This role provides on-site support to program staff, coaches, and officials, helping them carry out activities effectively and in alignment with departmental standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Key responsibilities include monitoring program areas for safety, enforcing facility and league rules, responding to incidents or concerns, and maintaining a welcoming environment. The position also manages schedules, coordinates game or activity logistics, and communicates updates to staff, officials, and participants as needed. Strong judgment, clear communication, and the ability to remain calm and organized during busy program hours are essential.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Program Supervision

  • Oversee evening recreation programs, leagues, and activities, ensuring smooth and timely operations.
  • Support staff, coaches, and officials by providing guidance, resources, and on-site problem-solving.
  • Monitor program areas to ensure participant and spectator safety, addressing hazards or concerns promptly.
  • Enforce facility, league, and department rules in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Respond to incidents, injuries, or conflicts and complete required documentation.


Scheduling & Logistics

  • Schedule and communicate with summer program officials. 
  • Maintain program schedules, including games, practices, and facility usage.
  • Communicate schedule updates, changes, and weather-related adjustments to staff, officials, and participants.
  • Coordinate equipment needs and ensure program spaces are properly set up and secured at the end of the evening.


Customer Service & Communication

  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for participants, parents, coaches, and spectators during evening programs.
  • Provide clear, professional communication and resolve concerns with tact and fairness.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and community-focused environment.


Administrative Support

  • Assist with program evaluations, attendance tracking, and incident reports.
  • Support Recreation Coordinators with program planning and improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with department policies and procedures.


Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Good interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate with participants, officials, spectators, other parks and rec staff.
  • Perform duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Job Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Ages 18 and older
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Experience working in recreation, sports programs, youth activities, or a related field.
  • Ability to supervise groups, manage conflicts, and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work evenings consistently.
  • Basic knowledge of safety practices and risk management in recreation settings.


Other Necessary Requirements:

  • Experience in sports officiating, coaching, or recreation program leadership.
  • Knowledge of baseball, softball, or other recreational sports rules and operations.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Represent the Parks & Recreation Department with professionalism and integrity.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all participants.
  • Demonstrate fairness, impartiality, and consistency in all officiating duties.

Working Conditions

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in mostly outdoor recreation settings, often during active programs.
  • Requires standing, walking, lifting equipment up to moderate weight, and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Evening and occasional weekend hours are required.

Physical Activities:

  • Ability to stand, run, and move continuously for the duration of assigned games.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to a moderate weight.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions for outdoor sports.

Tools and Equipment Used:

All necessary equipment will be provided by Parks & Recreation

Supervision Received:

Work is performed under the direction of Recreation Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor or other designated supervisors, with independent decision-making expected during on-site program operations.
