Job Description

Job Title: MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR 1.0 FTE

Support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth as they navigate the middle school years. The middle school counselor will provide individual and group counseling, support career exploration, collaborate with staff, and communicate with families to ensure students are engaged, supported, and prepared for success. This role includes participating in and supporting our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework and related processes.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling (required)
  • State of Michigan certification (NT endorsement) or a School Counselor License (SCL) (required)
  • Minimum of three years experience as a middle school counselor (preferred)
  • Training in Trauma Informed Strategies and Restorative Practices (or willingness to be trained) 
  • Understanding of the Section 504 process and requirements (preferred)

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to build effective and positive professional relationships with students, parents/guardians, and staff 
  • Excellent skills in academic, social, and emotional counseling of middle school students
  • Ability to motivate and inspire middle school students
  • Ability to support students in the creation and development of their Educational Development Plans (EDPs) and knowledge of Personal Curriculums (PCs)
  • Ability to oversee the Section 504 process and lead team meetings with parents/guardians
  • Ability to actively participate in the building Student Assistance Team (SAT) and Behavioral/Threat Assessment Team
  • Ability to develop and monitor individual Plans of Care that address students’ needs within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports
  • Ability to support and coordinate building a social-emotional learning program (TRAILS to Wellness)
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, and listening skills)
  • Ability to coordinate programs and partnerships, such as testing out and online learning
  • Willingness and commitment to participate in curriculum development, school improvement committees, and professional development opportunities
  • Ability to organize and manage numerous tasks and responsibilities 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and national assessments, including M-STEP, NWEA MAP, and PSAT
  • Willingness and ability to maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
  • Ability to complete other duties as assigned
