About the Department
Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, perform a variety of skilled duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of assigned facilities, utilities and equipment including tasks in electrical work, HVAC, Building automation controls, carpentry, plumbing, locksmithing and painting. To supervise and participate in the work of Maintenance crew. Exercises indirect supervision over assigned staff.
Position Duties
Essential Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise, participate in and perform the more skilled work of the maintenance and installation of electrical systems, heating/air condition systems, Control technologies, carpentry, plumbing, cement, masonry, tile setting, carpet installation and painting, and in the repair of, and locks.
Install, maintain and repair a wide variety of electrical components in City buildings.
Supervise contracted services.
Assign work and instruct crewmembers in work and safety methods and use of tools and equipment.
Schedule repair and preventive maintenance; maintain servicing records.
Prepare project cost estimates; purchase materials and supplies as needed; read and interpret blueprints.
Enforce building safety procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Electrical tools and materials; accepted safety standards and approved methods of electrical Installation.
- Principles of electrical theory.
- Building & HVAC Automated Control systems.
- Computers and software applications for record keeping and EMS operations.
- Safety practices.
- Standard carpentry and construction techniques.
- Use of standard hand tools and power tools.
- Perform skilled electrical installation, inspection and maintenance work.
- Read and interpret electrical diagrams, plans and specifications.
- Perform skilled maintenance and repair on mechanical equipment.
- Operate power tools.
- Follow oral and written instruction in an independent manner.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Supervise and train assigned personnel
- Report to work every scheduled workday.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of experience and education that would likely be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Three years of increasingly responsible electrical/mechanical repair and maintenance experience including at least one year of journey level experience. Completion of the twelfth grade supplemented with specialized courses in building maintenance and repair or equipment maintenance and repair.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Valid California driver's license.EPA Certification.

Environment:
Indoor and outdoor work environment.Regular exposure to fumes, dust, dirt, oil/grease.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Seasonal heat and cold.
Adverse temperature changes associated with Commercial Refrigeration repair.
Physical Demands:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of tools and equipment.Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Seeing to perform maintenance duties.
Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects as assigned by the position.
Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Climbing ladders and working from heights.
