About The Role
Under the direct supervision of the Principal, Heartwood School, the classroom teacher is responsible for providing a developmental and instructional program for assigned students. The Teacher will focus on development and implementation of student IEP’s, planning and implementation of daily instructional activities, monitoring student progress and providing consultation to staff, paraprofessionals, agencies, parents and administrators.
- Provides and coordinates an appropriate, positive learning environment with a variety of activities and materials for student intervention and instruction.
- Prepares and implements daily lesson plans and instructional schedules for assigned students based on Michigan Curriculum Frameworks extended benchmarks, grade level content expectations and individual student goals.
- Develops and implements each student’s IEP, monitors student progress toward IEP goals/objectives, and periodically reports on this progress.
About You
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with special education endorsement in the area of Cognitive Impairments or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in programming for students with special needs.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of curriculum and interventions to utilize with students with special needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Teacher, Special Education AFFILIATION: IIPSA

GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Principal, Heartwood School, the
classroom teacher is responsible for providing a developmental and instructional program for assigned
students. The Teacher will focus on development and implementation of student IEP’s, planning and
implementation of daily instructional activities, monitoring student progress and providing consultation to
staff, paraprofessionals, agencies, parents and administrators.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:
1. Provides and coordinates an appropriate, positive learning environment with a variety of activities and
materials for student intervention and instruction.
2. Prepares and implements daily lesson plans and instructional schedules for assigned students based on
Michigan Curriculum Frameworks extended benchmarks, grade level content expectations and
individual student goals.
3. Develops and implements each student’s IEP, monitors student progress toward IEP goals/objectives,
and periodically reports on this progress.
4. Establishes a classroom management plan that includes positive behavior supports.
5. Completes training and implements strategies in non-violent crisis intervention and works with the
behavior team to address potential student behaviors.
6. Conducts regular communication between home and school and provides periodic home contacts with
parents.
7. Provides information, resources and support to families and building staff regarding student needs.
8. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with parents, support service staff, teachers,
administrators, agency personnel, classroom paraprofessionals and transportation personnel to support
student needs, issues, programming, services, school activities and transitions.
9. Completes and maintains student attendance, documentation and record keeping in accordance with
district policies and procedures.
10. Participates in building level activities, staff meetings, in-service activities program team meetings,
student staffings and educational planning meetings for assigned students.
11. Identifies and monitors the specific job duties and responsibilities for assigned paraprofessionals to
implement in support of student learning.
12. Works with physically impaired students, utilizing the tenets of the MOVE curriculum, to increase
independence.
13. Follows the expectations of Ingham Intermediate School District and Heartwood School as outlined
in staff manuals.

14. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the supervising special education administrator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in a school environment, which includes classroom, office and related work areas. Instruction is
provided within the home, community, or educational settings as determined by an IEP. This position will
interface with LEA and IISD staff, community providers, parents, and agency personnel.
