JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Director of Student Health & Counseling / Nurse Practitioner
DEPARTMENT: Student Services
REPORTS TO: Vice President for Student Success & Dean of Students
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Primarily responsible for providing clinical care and administrative leadership for the on-campus student health and counseling center. This role combines direct patient care with operational management to ensure the delivery of high-quality, accessible counseling and healthcare services for students. The Director of Student Health & Counseling/Nurse Practitioner oversees clinic operations, supervises staff, maintains regulatory compliance, and promotes wellness initiatives that support student health and academic success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Care
- Provide primary healthcare services to students including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
- Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with state scope-of-practice laws.
- Manage acute illnesses, minor injuries, chronic conditions, and preventive health services.
- Conduct physical exams, health screenings, and review of immunization compliance.
- Provide health education and counseling on topics such as nutrition, mental health, sexual health, substance use, and disease prevention.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists, hospitals, or community healthcare providers when necessary.
Clinic Administration
- Manage day-to-day operation of student health and counseling.
- Develop and implement clinic policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with state healthcare regulations, HIPAA, FERPA, and institutional policies.
- Oversee management of medical and counseling records as well as electronic health systems.
- Manage clinic scheduling, workflow, and patient service processes.
- Coordinate purchasing and inventory of medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals.
Staff Supervision & Leadership
- Recruit, train, and supervise clinic staff including nurses, mental health therapists, and administrative personnel.
- Provide ongoing performance feedback and professional development opportunities.
- Foster a collaborative and student-centered clinical environment.
Health Promotion & Campus Collaboration
- Develop and implement campus-wide health education programs and wellness initiatives.
- Partner with student services, athletics, and campus ministries to address student health needs.
- Participate in campus emergency preparedness and public health response planning.
- Track and report health trends affecting the student population.
Compliance & Quality Improvement
- Maintain medical and mental health standards and best practices.
- Monitor quality improvement initiatives and patient satisfaction.
- Ensure accurate documentation and adherence to infection control practices.
