- 2 years of previous experience teaching and/or coursework in an assignment within the last 3 years
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of STEM concepts and instructional best practices
- Knowledge and Experience with MS Office Suite, Google Docs, and PowerSchool Experience is a plus
- Excellent communication skills
- Bilingual preferred
- Provide experiences for students in the four disciplines of art: production, heritage, criticism, and aesthetics.
- Provide students with the opportunity to experience drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, three-dimensional work, and graphic communication.
- Develop an awareness of art within the total structure of society - art does not occur in isolation, but is interdependent with the social, political, economic, religious and intellectual aspects of society.
- Develop student skills in responding to art - perceiving, interpreting, and judging the significance of expressive and aesthetic qualities in the environment and art forms.
- Coordinate the aesthetic experience with the teaching of heritage, criticism, and production, by encouraging students to make distinctions about various points, draw their own conclusions, and build arguments to defend their opinions based on their knowledge.
- Develop an instructional plan and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, working time, and reflection.
- Have an awareness of the grade-level technology expectations and incorporate technology into the art experience when appropriate.
- Participate in school site planning activities.
- Model for students' techniques and the thinking skills necessary to participate in the art experience. (i.e., production demonstrations and aesthetic scanning)
- Work cooperatively with other art teachers in the district, sharing strategies and techniques used to implement the art curriculum goals.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to integrate art into other curricular areas.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an atmosphere conducive to the educational process.
- Follow the Child Development Project guidelines of mutual respect.
- Teach care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Instruct students in the safe and proper use of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Assess student work in a manner that actively involves the student.
- Display student work in the school and other public areas (i.e., public library) in a manner that informs viewers of student goals.
- Select and requisition instructional materials, tools, and supplies, and abide by the rules and regulations governing the use of toxic and hazardous materials.
- Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities related to the district or school initiatives.
- Communicate with parents on an ongoing basis and be an advocate for the arts program. (i.e., articles in the school newsletter, displays with student goals, phone calls, person-to-person)
- Work with classroom teachers and/or parent volunteers to arrange student visits to the Nettie J. McKinnon Gallery (minimal one visit by third grade and another by sixth grade for each student).
