Job Description

About the Department

DEFINTION:  This position is responsible for the enforcement of safety rules and regulations for swimmers using the facility pool; as well as teaching swim lessons.

REPORTS TO:  Senior Center Manager/Pool Manager

Position Duties

  • Responsible for the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for the conduct of swimmers and being properly attired for swimming.
  • Responsible for the control of swimmers entering and departing from the pool area to dressing rooms.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of pool deck and maintaining a hazard free environment.
  • Make written reports of all accidents.
  • Perform additional services as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. 
Special Qualifications:
Must be at least 15.5 years of age.

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to Enforces pool rules and safety regulations to prevent drowning, injuries, or accidents.
  •  Monitors and observes all areas of the pool and reacts proactively.
  • Assists and rescues swimmers when necessary.
  • Administers first aid and performs other emergency services as needed including CPR, AED, and blackboarding.
  • Provides customer service to all customers, answers question, talks to customers, explains, and communicates with them.
  • Inspects facilities for cleanliness and assists with daily maintenance duties to keep pool, deck, and locker rooms clean.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on facility and equipment and reports issues.
  • Fills out all necessary paperwork including attendance and chemical logs, incident reports, participant certificates, and other paperwork as necessary.
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures. 
  • Takes care of equipment and stores equipment properly. 
  • Attends and contributes at in-service trainings, skills practice sessions and meetings. 
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. 
  • Uses all required safety equipment. 


License(s)/Certification(s) American Red Cross First Aid certificate, or approved equivalent, at the time of appointment. American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.) for the Professional Rescuer certificate, or approved equivalent, at the time of appointment. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate, or approved equivalent, at the time of appointment
