Grade 59 ($16.48 - $22.23) State Salary Schedule

The salary for this position is based upon the successful applicant’s years of service in the NC State Retirement System in the same or similar position.  Experience outside of this system is not recognized for pay purposes.  For current Lincoln County School employees, this position will be paid according to the current Lincoln County Schools’ pay scale.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Requires a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Under general supervision, a Behavioral Support Assistant (BSA) will perform a variety of tasks in assisting a student and teachers. 

The Behavioral Support Assistant (BSA) provides individualized behavioral support while utilizing positive research-based interventions to teach students how to appropriately manage their own behavior.  In addition, the BSA models the interventions with teachers and assists the teachers in gaining knowledge on how to work with the identified students. When necessary, the BSA works with staff and students to deescalate crisis situations that may arise from inappropriate behavior.  The goal is to move the BSA away from the student as the student gains more independent skills.  The BSA may be working with more than one student at different school sites.

• The Behavior Support Assistant’s (BSA) work day is 7.50 hours, from 7:45 until 3:15 with a 30-minute lunch unless changed for coverage needs for assigned student. 


• Maintain and follow a schedule of service for assigned students.  Changes may only occur based on the agreement of the principal, teacher, and Behavior Liaison. 


• Sign in and out on the TACS each work day. In addition, BSA will sign in and out at each school upon arrival and departure.


• Watch/wait for the assigned student’s transportation, meet and escort student to the classroom as needed.


• Document the research-based interventions utilized to support goals on student’s IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).


• Implement and maintain the use of positive behavior supports.


• Assist in the implementation and monitoring of the student’s behavior, any behavior system, and the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).


• Implement and maintain a data collection system to assist in progress monitoring student’s behavior for progress reports and IEP decision making.


• Submit monthly suspension and expulsion data to the Behavior Liaison.


• Assist in collecting data for PRC 29 reports three times a year at designated times


• Aid the student during academic activities; checking and help with correction of assignments, assisting during test administration, and providing individualized instruction for a student after the teacher has provided materials and lesson plans for the assistant to follow.


• Supervise and cue the student during group instruction to assist him / her in maximizing instructional time and time on task.


• Assist the teacher in planning and preparing activities involving the assigned student and his/her behavioral expectations or instruction. 


• Accompany and supervise the student throughout the school building for transitions between classes during the designated time the BSA is assigned to the student. 


• If the BSA is assigned to a student during lunch, he/she will accompany and supervise child during this time. The BSA must arrange to clock out and take a duty-free lunch at another time during the day when this occurs.


• Communicate first with the student’s classroom teacher and School Administrator when concerns or issues arise.  If further communication is needed consult with the Behavior Liaison.


• Conduct all responsibilities in a professional manner; communication, dress, behavior, socialization, use of technology, attendance, adherence to district and school policies, and acknowledgement of administrative authority.


• Provide assistance to substitute teachers in the implementation of the assigned student’s Behavior Intervention Plan. (BSA’s cannot be used as substitute teacher or assistant in the absence of the teacher or teaching assistant.)


• Maintain confidentiality regarding the student and student records.


• Attend and participate in monthly meetings of the Behavior Support Team.


• Complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training yearly and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification. 


• Follow school and district guidelines regarding crisis situations. 


• Attend all required professional development and departmental meetings provided by the Exceptional Children Department. 


• Must be able to perform heavy work, exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force ocassionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects


• Other duties as assigned by the Chief of Exceptional Children’s Services
