About the Department
The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a Recreation Team Member to aid in coordination of programs and oversee facility operations.
This position will organize group activities and games, lead arts and crafts, and monitor adult, youth or family activities and special events. This position will work in various recreation facilities depending on availability and skill set. These job tasks may require additional on the job specialized skills, training and certifications which will be provided upon hire. This position may be responsible for program registration, facility rentals, daily deposits, cash handling, parent interaction, and any rules of conduct infraction enforcement. This position oversees patrons of all ages.
This is a temporary, non-benefited position to work 15 – 25 hours per week to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
Position is open until filled, review of applicants begins April 29, 2026.
Physical requirements and work environment:
- Work environment is varied depending on facility, venue, and program; may be indoor and/or outdoor year-round and include work in an outdoor environment during inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications: Recreation
- Minimum 18 years old, or one (1) year of experience in recreation program planning or similar field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience with additional appropriate licenses and/or certifications.
- Must obtain and maintain certifications in CPR/AED, and First Aid within one (1) month of date of hire.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record for past 5 years. License history check will be completed upon hire.
Position Duties
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Facilitate community recreation activities, programs, and events as assigned; may provide specialized programs dependent upon education and experience.
- Performs specific duties as outlined per activity, program or event.
- Adapt programming for participants with special conditions or physical limitations.
- Supervise and operate recreation facilities as assigned; maintain facility safety and security for all users.
- Assist with program and facility record keeping.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Provide customer service to program participants and patrons.
- Communicate with general public, staff and supervisors in a professional and timely manner; both written and verbal.
- Work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions and intervene as needed.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for all participants; perform general cleaning and light maintenance as needed.
- Work as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, staff and supervisors.
- Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate reporting.
- Complies with all City and Departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform office related duties and tasks (computer, phone, copier/fax, etc.)
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
