JOB SUMMARY:
- Under the supervision of the Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, assists with the obtaining of patient specimens and carrying out simple medical laboratory operations.
- Performs routine daily clerical tasks, computer maintenance and orders supplies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Obtain specimens from patients.
- Under the direction of the Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, follow requests for specimen testing as prescribed by physicians.
- Draw and process specimens in compliance with established procedures.
- Identify and label specimens using positive patient identification.
Receives lab requests.
- Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests and processes them appropriately.
- Obtain signed physician orders for outpatient specimens.
- Verify non-staff physician license and signatures.
- Receive outpatient specimens from outside agencies.
- Enter requests into the electronic medical record.
As directed and supervised by Laboratory Assistant Supervisor perform routine daily clerical tasks and computer maintenance
- Answers the telephone and takes messages appropriately.
- Check and Print reports as required.
- File reports and other paperwork as needed.
- Restock and maintain supplies in the collection areas
- Properly label samples using positive patient identification techniques.
- Distribute samples to appropriate testing areas.
- Update patient, test, physician and QC files as directed.
- Under direction, assists with testing when needed (CLIA Waived)
- Interacts with patients of all ages, including infants, when collecting specimens.
- Carry out all other ethical tasks assigned by the laboratory assistant supervisor, medical laboratory scientists, and/or laboratory director.
- Perform venous and capillary phlebotomies.
- Perform clerical laboratory registration duties.
- Act as a liaison with patient family members or responsible parties.
- Operate a multi-line telephone using departmental procedures in answering, routing, and transferring calls.
