The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 Lead to serve as a member of the North Central Region’s (NCR) maintenance organization, located in Chelan, WA. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, this position operates a wide variety of highway equipment and tools while leading and working alongside a crew of Highway Maintenance Workers to perform maintenance and repair activities on a designated sub-section of state highway. This position supports roadway preservation and incident response efforts to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce, while providing day-to-day leadership and guidance to assigned crew members. This position supports WSDOT’s strategic goals by providing maintenance necessary for the continued safe and reliable movement of people, goods, and services across the state.
What to Expect
This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. The schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour shifts. Days, nights, weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Winter Evening shift may be required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 3 will:
- Lead assigned Highway Maintenance crew in the daily performance of roadway maintenance and operational activities, including providing direction, planning work, and training crew members.
- Perform and direct asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair using concrete, asphalt, and synthetic material.
- Maintain drainage system, including catch basin, sedimentation facility, and ditch, and perform erosion and slide repair activity.
- Conduct roadside maintenance activity including sign repair, guardrail and impact attenuator installation, vegetation management, danger tree removal, and litter and debris removal.
- Haul and handle material such as rip rap, hot and cold asphalt, sand, and gravel to support maintenance operation.
- Provide equipment instruction and training to personnel, and track, document, and report daily work activity including inventory and K-job paperwork.
- Lead snow and ice control operation, including loading truck, operating spreader equipment, and maintaining stockpile site.
- Respond to emergency situations by establishing traffic control, supporting incident response and first responder activity, coordinating with external agency, and assisting in unlawful dwelling cleanup and removal following required safety protocol.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Roadway Maintenance and Equipment Experience: Demonstrated proficiency in roadway maintenance, snow and ice operations, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent work requiring similar knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Traffic Control Operations: Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.

In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:
- A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement and without restrictions.
- A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card.
- The ability to traverse steep, rough, and uneven terrain and work at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
- The ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
- The ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
- Safety Compliance and Safe Work Practices: Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
- Crew Leadership and Decision-Making: Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction.
