Job Description

Part-Time and Temporary; Non-exempt; Up to 29 Hours/Week; M-F shifts occurring during school meal periods. 


 


General Responsibilities 


 


This entry-level position is responsible for preparing and serving hot and cold food items in compliance with Norfolk Public Schools, USDA, local, state, and federal policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines, in a school setting or in the central kitchen.  Work is performed under general supervision of?the School Nutrition Manager.   


 


Education and Experience 


 


Food service and/or customer service experience is preferred, but not required. A current Food Handler’s card issued by the Norfolk Health Department is required prior to starting work and must be maintained throughout employment.  Any equivalent combination of education and experience. 


 


Essential Job Functions 


 


The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks: 



  • Provide excellent customer service to students and staff.   

  • Receive incoming deliveries and properly rotate stock.  

  • Prepare and portion food items according to the Quality Instruction Guide. 

  • Set up serving line areas with all required meal components, in an attractive manner.  

  • Safely serve food during established meal periods.  

  • Properly utilize and account for School Nutrition Inventory. 

  • Complete accurate meal counts utilizing paper documents and/or computerized point-of-sale system; including processing payments for a la carte sales (if assigned to a school).   

  • Clean and sanitize pots, pans, dishes, utensils, appliances, and equipment per standard operating procedures.   

  • Clean and sanitize prep tables and cafeteria tables. 

  • Sweep and mop kitchen floors.   

  • Pack transport boxes for food distribution to the schools (if assigned to central kitchen). 

  • Participate in School Nutrition marketing promotions and nutrition education activities.   

  • Complete Civil Rights training, as required by USDA.
