About the Department

The City of Blaine, WA, is seeking an experienced and skilled Boat Captain to operate the historic Plover ferry during the seasonal operation period. The Plover ferry serves as a vital connection between Blaine Harbor and the Semiahmoo Resort, enhancing the local tourism experience. This position is ideal for a dedicated maritime professional with a passion for providing exceptional service and ensuring passenger safety.

Position Duties

•    Safely operate the Plover ferry according to the established schedule and routes.
•    Conduct pre-departure inspections and ensure the vessel is seaworthy and compliant with safety regulations.
•    Navigate the ferry in various weather conditions while ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers.
•    Maintain a high level of customer service, providing passengers with information about the ferry, routes, and local points of interest.
•    Monitor and manage passenger boarding and disembarking procedures to ensure safety and efficiency.
•    Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the ferry to ensure it remains in optimal condition.
•    Respond to emergency situations promptly and effectively, following established protocols.
•    Keep accurate logs of trips, maintenance, and any incidents that occur.
•    Collaborate with the Public Works Director and other staff to ensure smooth operations and address any issues that arise.

Minimum Qualifications

•    Valid U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License (minimum OUPV/Six-Pack License).
•    25 Ton Master Captain’s license. 
•    Previous experience operating passenger vessels, preferably in a similar role, preferred.
•    Strong knowledge of maritime safety regulations and best practices.
•    Excellent navigational skills and the ability to operate the ferry in various weather conditions.
•    Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
•    Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting tasks on the vessel.
•    First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
•    Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required by the ferry schedule.

Other Qualifications

Part-time, Seasonal, Non—Exempt
Approximately 20 to 40 hours per week
Required availability Thursday through Sunday, May through September. Other workdays may be possible.
