Job Description:

Wabtec Foundry, in Wallaceburg, Ontario, is a business unit within Wabtec Corporation’s Components Division.  Originally founded in the 1930’s, Wabtec Foundry is an Iron & Aluminum Foundry that focuses on producing products to support Wabtec’s extensive product line for the Rail Industry; Freight Car Components, Locomotive, Transit, as well as various other Industrial markets.

 

Who will you be working with?

 

Wabtec Foundry is currently seeking a Tooling and Process Manager to join our team. This position reports directly to the General Manager.  The Tooling and Process Manager will be the technical lead for our iron/aluminum foundry operations, working closely with production leadership and team members. You will oversee the entire lifecycle of foundry tooling—from conceptual design and procurement to shop floor implementation—while simultaneously refining casting processes to improve yield, reduce scrap, and ensure customer quality expectations. You will focus on designing, optimizing, and managing the casting processes used to create our customer designed products.  You will work with all team members to ensure our castings meet the highest industry standards expected from our customers.

  • Be a team player and solution provider; communicate and collaborate with cross-functional areas (Production, Quality, Engineering, Purchasing, Finance, etc).

 

What do we want to know about you?

  • Minimum 10 years experience in Tooling/Pattern/Mold Design, utilizing CAD software and 2D print reading.
  • Strong leadership skills with a minimum of10 years experience in metal casting industry.
  • Strong organization skills and proven ability in problem solving and process improvements.
  • Post-Secondary education in a related field - Appropriate Technical level Degree or Diploma in the field of CAD/CAM Design and/or Engineering
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Management, Customers and Production Team
  • Strong computer application skills, including Microsoft Office, CAD,  and the ability to learn new software applications.  Experience in MagmaSoft simulation software would be an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work with various cross-functional teams and related assignments

 

 

What will your typical day look like?

  • Tooling & Pattern Equipment Management: Oversee the Pattern Shop operations, including the design, procurement, and maintenance of patterns, core boxes, and fixtures.
  • Project Management:  Manage budgets and timelines to procure new tooling, repair or modify existing tooling and work with vendors and internal resources to optimize cost and timing for Wabtec and it’s customers.  Use of CAD software, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc, to aid in the design patterns, core boxes, and assembly fixtures based on customer blueprints or 3D models.
  • Process Optimization: Develop and refine casting procedures—including melting, molding, and pouring—to enhance production efficiency and minimize scrap rates.  Develop rigging and gating designs to ensure high-quality metal flow and minimize casting defects like shrinkage or porosity.
  • Continuous Improvement:  Lead and/or participate in Kaizens that can be identified for improvements in scrap reduction, yield, production efficiency, cost and safety.  Attend and support regular Scrap Reduction meetings to lead/contribute towards problem identification and solutions.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical support to team members in Production, Maintenance and Quality, for all Foundry technical related aspects.
  • Simulation Modelling:  Use of MagmaSoft simulation modelling to analyze process data and troubleshoot casting defects.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): Work with Sales staff to quote new potential work based on technical requirements and cost/timing quotes and/or estimates.  Lead the startup of new patterns and core tooling, ensuring seamless integration into the manufacturing workflow.  Work closely with Quality staff to understand and meet customer requirements for development of new products.
  • Reliability of Foundry of Equipment: Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure the reliability of molding machines, core making machines and sand preparation procedures, to ensure Tooling and Process can be optimized with Equipment Performance.  Assist, lead or participate in new equipment accusation.
  • Safety & Compliance: Enforce rigorous health and safety protocols as set out in Wabtec’s EHS policies and procedures.

 

The successful candidate will be required to work on-site, with no hybrid time working from home (40-hour on-site workweek – 8-hour days).

Our job titles may span more than one career level.  The salary rate for this role is currently $83,300 to $110,400.  The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as:  training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
