Job Description

Job Purpose

Provide comprehensive child life services for patients and their families to meet the emotional, developmental, and social needs of our patients and to promote effective understanding, coping, and adjustment to hospitalization, injury, and/or illness.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Duty

Percent of Time

Provides developmentally appropriate preparation for upcoming surgeries, medical procedures, and diagnostic testing to patients and families.

15%

Provides developmentally appropriate procedural support to patients and families including, but not limited to: psychological preparation, distraction, emotional support, and advocacy.

20%

Provides medical play sessions to promote patient desensitization, exploration, and mastery of medical equipment and medical themes.

10%

Provides therapeutic play and group activities to promote understanding of injury/illness, coping, and hospital adjustment, recognizing and adapting materials, education, and activities to meet the unique needs and abilities of patients served.

30%

Provides sibling support as need is assessed.

10%

Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive behavioral management recommendations when need is assessed. 

10%

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications 

Education:

Minimum of Bachelor Degree in Child Life, Child Development, Human Development, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, or related field.  Master’s degree preferred.  Completion of Child Life internship

Experience:

2 years working as a Certified Child Life Specialist preferred

License/Certification/Credential:

Certification as a Child Life Specialist through the Association for Child Life Professionals
