About the Department

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Maintenance and Operations Crew Chief in the Grounds Maintenance Division.  The incumbent is responsible for providing oversight of maintenance operations related to planning and implementing grounds maintenance projects. Incumbents must be able to operate all types of heavy equipment and machinery and perform routine maintenance and diagnostics. The work located for this incumbent will be 1638 Commerce Road Richmond, Va. 23224

Position Duties

  • Planning, supervising, and directing the maintenance, repair, and construction of parks, grounds, and facilities for a variety of assigned areas
  • Providing oversight of removal of snow and ice from sidewalks and parking areas
  • Inspecting the work of assigned crew members, providing technical guidance, inspecting completed projects, and submit reports of work completed
  • Supervising assigned staff, scheduling staff assignments and projects, determining work performance standards, conducting performance evaluations, and providing direction to staff
  • Providing oversight of vehicle and equipment maintenance
  • Coordinating assigned functions with other divisions and departments
  • Recommending project priorities and work methods, requisition of required materials, equipment, and supplies required for completion of projects
  • Interacting with the public to resolve concerns, answer questions, and provide information regarding grounds maintenance activities 
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

**City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who work in this class are considered essential personnel and may be required to work beyond normal work schedules, during declared emergencies and major weather events, as well as nights, weekend, holidays and on-call.**

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of college or specialized training in area of focus
  • Two (2) years of equipment operation/driving experience or maintenance experience in the area related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
 LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Some assignments may require a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, pull, finger, talk, see, hear and use repetitive motion; frequently feel, grasp, frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
