Description

The Cheer & Pom Instructor is responsible for leading energetic, positive, and skill-focused cheer and pom practices that inspire confidence, teamwork, and school spirit. Instructors create a structured and supportive environment where youth build coordination, strength, rhythm, leadership skills, and performance ability. This role combines technical instruction with enthusiasm and encouragement to help participants grow both as athletes and as teammates. A strong commitment to safety, positive behavior, and youth development is essential.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Demonstrate the Y core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring while ensuring that participant safety is always the top priority.

2.      Lead high-energy cheer and pom practices using structured curriculum and lesson plans that emphasize fun, teamwork, and progressive skill development

3.      Teach and demonstrate foundational and progressive skills including:

*Proper motions and arm placement, Jumps and flexibility, Rhythm, timing, and        pom technique, Sideline cheers and chants and Basic tumbling (as appropriate)

*Choreography for performances and showcases

*Introductory stunt fundamentals, including safe spotting, body positioning,               bases and flyers roles, and low-level partner or group stunts

4.      Develop engaging routines for showcases, games, pep rallies, and community events.

5.      Provide enthusiastic instruction, positive reinforcement, and constructive feedback to build confidence and team spirit.

6.      Ensure proper technique and safe spotting procedures during tumbling and stunt instruction.

7.      Maintain accurate attendance and required documentation, including incident reports when necessary.

8.      Communicate consistently and professionally with parents regarding participant progress, expectations, and upcoming events.

9.      Attend staff meetings and required trainings.

10.  Build strong relationships with participants and families to promote connection to the YMCA community and support program retention.

11.  Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

1.    Previous experience teaching or coaching cheer, pom, dance, gymnastics, or related performance sport preferred.

2.      Minimum of one (1) year experience leading youth programs in recreational, athletic, or educational settings.

3.      Knowledge of basic stunt progressions and spotting techniques preferred.

4.      High energy, leadership presence, and ability to confidently engage youth of varying ages and skill levels.

5.      Complete CPR PRO/AED/FA and Emergency Action Plan training within 6 months of hire.

6.      Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

 

 

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

1.      Exhibit the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all aspects of work within the YMCA.

2.      Ability to plan, organize, and lead structured and engaging practices independently.

3.      Ability to safely instruct, observe, and correct participant technique.

4.      Strong classroom management and youth supervision skills.

5.      Ability to motivate participants while maintaining structure and discipline.

6.      Effective communication skills with participants, parents, staff, and leadership.

7.      High energy, creativity, initiative, flexibility, and genuine enthusiasm for youth development.

8.      Ability to coach participants of varying abilities and learning styles.

9.      Ability to work flexible hours including daytime, evening, and/or weekend shifts.

10.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and physically demonstrate skills as needed.

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.

2. Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising children.

3. Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations

4. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
