Job Description

About the Department

The Intern is a current college student or recent graduate of a regionally accredited college or university with strong academic credentials and an interest in working in public service. The Intern will assist the assigned department with tasks such as data analysis, research, special projects, customer service and clerical support. The Intern may be expected to help improve processes or systems through specific tasks like automation or reporting. The Intern may also be assigned to assist with new or ongoing programming.


Each level of Intern is differentiated by the scope of assignment and level of completed education at the time of hire. The technical complexity of assigned work is progressive with each Intern level.


*This position is a temporary/seasonal, therefore the incumbent will not contribute to the New Mexico Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) but will contribute to social security.    Scheduling and duration of employment will not exceed nine months and is dependent on funding and operational needs.

Position Duties

Intern I

Education / higher education: Completion of at least the freshman year of college and pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field of study in good academic standing.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  none 

Intern II

Education / higher education: Completion of at least an associate’s degree or enrolled in at least the junior year of a bachelor’s degree in any field of study in good academic standing.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  none 

Intern III

Education / higher education: Completion of at least a bachelor’s degree in any field of study within the last twelve months and/or currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in good academic standing. 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  none 


Intern IV

Education / higher education: Completion of at least a bachelor’s degree in any field of study within the last twelve months and currently enrolled in an American Bar Association-accredited law school.

Minimum number of years of directly related experience:  none 


Driver’s License requirement:    Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License     Required Endorsements:  None

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations:  None


Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge: Relevant academic performance or experience with a focus on aspects related to the assigned department.

Skills:     Must be able to successfully produce research memos and other documents, communicate via e-mail, and perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position.  Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. 

Abilities:  Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excell, PowerPoint) or relevant software tools. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.   

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities:    This position works with various City departments on an as needed basis.     This position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.

  • Assist with gathering market data and industry trends to support team decisions.
  • Answer email, manage calendars, schedule meetings and complete other clerical tasks to help keep the operations and team organized.
  • Maintain filing systems (either physical or digital).
  • Help with various stages of ongoing projects, such as brainstorming, organizing, or executing tasks under supervision.
  • Help with programming and other related support services.
  • Support the completion of tasks related to product development, marketing campaigns, or event coordination.
  • Depending on the department, interns might assist with answering customer inquiries and providing updates.
  • Take part in training sessions, workshops, or shadowing senior team members to develop skills.
  • Actively seeks feedback to improve performance and gain knowledge of industry-specific tools or processes.
  • Input and organize data into spreadsheets or software tools.
  • Perform basic data analysis and provide insights for reports.
  • Performs related work as assigned depending on department placement.
