For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced Ground Segment IT Infrastructure Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

 

Job description

You will be a member of a Technical Assistance Service Team integrated into the customer to support the EU/ESA IRIS2 programme under the responsibility of the Directorate of Connectivity and Secure Communications (D/CSC).

 

Responsibilities

As Ground Segment IT Infrastructure Engineer reporting to the Service Manager you will be responsible for providing engineering support for the design and implementation of the large-scale IT infrastructure for the IRIS2 ground segment. You will support reviews and deployments of the IT infrastructure in line with operational and project requirements. In your daily work you will interface with system/ subsystems engineers, operation engineers, and security teams within ESA and well as interface on behalf of ESA with other industrial partners in charge of installation of the IT infrastructure.

 

The key tasks to be performed are:

  • Provide engineering support related to the ground IT infrastructure solutions, with deep knowledge of scalable and containerised applications across multiple environments.
  • Support deployments, reviews, and milestone achievement of the IT infrastructure, in line with operational and project requirements.
  • Support LAN/WAN architectures, including routing and switching protocols (such as OSPF and BGP), VLAN design, VPN technologies, and troubleshoot and optimise endtoend network performance.
  • Support datacentre environments, hypervisors (e.g., VMware, HyperV, or KVM), server and storage platforms, clustering and the operation of platformasaservice environments in multitenant setups.
  • Deploy and manage infrastructure using automation and IaC tools like Terraform, Ansible or PowerShell, combined with cloud platforms and container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Support network and platform security, identity and access management, monitoring and observability, incident response, documentation and adherence to structured operational practices such as ITIL.

 

Regular travel within Europe is expected in this position.

 

This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

The foreseen start of work is May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

  • At least 4 years relevant professional working experience, ideally in an international working environment.
  • Deep knowledge of scalable and containerised applications across multiple environments.
  • Knowledge of data centre architectures, networking, and system deployment strategies.
  • Knowledge of containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and automation solutions e.g. orchestration frameworks (Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell, etc.).

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and certifications in ITIL are desirable.
  • Prior knowledge of large space project ground segments would be very useful.

Soft skills:

  • Service orientation and ability to liaise with other domains and IT teams, security officers etc.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Good English language skills, written and spoken.
