Position Description

The Automation Assembly Technician supports the design, build, and integration of automated manufacturing equipment used in the production of medical devices at Applied Medical. This role is responsible for assembling precision mechanical and electromechanical automation systems, interpreting engineering documentation and three-dimensional computer-aided design models, and ensuring equipment is built to exact specifications. The Automation Assembly Technician plays a key role in supporting engineering, manufacturing, and controls teams by delivering high-quality automation builds that improve efficiency, reliability, and production scalability across a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assemble automation equipment, precision machinery, and mechanical systems using detailed assembly drawings, three-dimensional models, and bills of materials.
  • Interpret mechanical assembly drawings, exploded views, and computer-aided design models to understand fit, tolerances, alignment, and assembly intent.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy using precision measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, and height gauges, to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
  • Utilize hand tools and torque-controlled equipment to assemble mechanical components according to torque specifications and hardware requirements.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and controls teams to support equipment builds, improvements, and design feedback.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues, including misalignment, binding, tolerance stack-up, and component fitment concerns.
  • Assist with machine modification, adjustment, and fabrication of simple components to support automation builds and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate assembly documentation, checklists, and quality records while sustaining clean and organized workspaces in accordance with safety and quality standards.

Success in This Role Looks Like

  • Deliver automation assemblies that meet engineering specifications, quality standards, and production readiness requirements.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical or assembly issues efficiently to maintain build schedules and project timelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineering and controls teams to support equipment integration and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and craftsmanship in precision assembly and measurement.
  • Maintain organized documentation and workspaces that support quality, safety, and operational excellence.
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning within automation and manufacturing teams.

Position Requirements

This position requires the following skills and attributes:

  • Demonstrate experience assembling automation equipment, industrial machinery, or precision mechanical systems in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Interpret mechanical assembly drawings, bills of materials, and three-dimensional computer-aided design models such as SolidWorks or equivalent.
  • Apply knowledge of fits, tolerances, alignment principles, and mechanical hardware, including fasteners and torque specifications.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments such as digital and dial calipers, micrometers, and height gauges to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Use hand tools including hex keys, torque wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, and spanners to perform detailed mechanical assembly.
  • Demonstrate strong mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose fitment, tolerance, and alignment issues.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and controls engineering.
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail, organization, and commitment to quality workmanship and safety standards.
  • Possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate or equivalent practical experience in mechanical assembly, automation assembly, or machine building.

Preferred

The following skills and attributes are preferred:

  • Demonstrate experience operating manual machining equipment, including milling machines, drill presses, and lathes, to machine or modify simple components.
  • Interpret electrical schematics and apply basic knowledge of wiring practices, sensors, motors, actuators, and control panels.
  • Troubleshoot basic electrical or controls-related issues within automated equipment and electromechanical systems.
  • Apply familiarity with revision control, drawing updates, and engineering change processes within an automation or manufacturing environment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to automation equipment, machine builds, and production efficiency.
