CUSTODIAN IV

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs intermediate, semiskilled work supervising and participating in the care and cleaning of school buildings, grounds, and furnishings. Work is performed under general supervision. Limited supervision is exercised over assigned personnel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Cleans school building interiors.
Maintains school grounds.
Supervises employees engaged in the care and maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and furnishing.
Develops cleaning schedules.
Supervises and inspects the work of other custodial personnel.
Performs difficult maintenance operations.
Checks all rooms for cleanliness and possible damage such as broken windows, etc.
Installs new light bulbs and changes filters as required.
Checks circuit panel and breakers.
Repairs damaged locks, lockers, furniture, and simple machinery.
Determines that the building is properly serviced at all times and that staff is adequately utilized.
Checks HVAC system for proper operation during night activities.
Prepares building, rooms, etc., for concerts, athletic events, meetings, etc.
Keeps time and attendance records for custodial staff.
Orders, receives, and stores various custodial supplies.
Instructs custodial staff in the proper use of equipment and cleaning materials.
Removes trash when needed.
Ensures dumpster areas are clean at all times.
Ensures restrooms are clean at all times.
Strips and refinishes floors.
Burnishes floors.
Shampoos carpets.
Machine scrubs restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
Provides daytime coverage in restrooms (spot mopping, replenishing supplies, etc.)
Inspects fire extinguishers.
Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or its equivalent.
At least two years of custodial and grounds keeping experience.
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
Skill in supervising the work of subordinate staff.
Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in written form.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and school staff.
Ability to read.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, oils, and wearing a respirator.
The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and observing general surroundings and activities.
